5.0 out of 5 stars A Fun Guide to "Doing Fetish Photography", December 18, 2003
By
Todd Hawley (San Francisco CA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Photography for Perverts (Paperback)
This book is fun to look at just for the hot fetish pictures alone, but there's also a ton of information about doing fetish oriented photography, whether just for yourself or professionally. The author who has done this sort of thing for years and years offers his advice on items like negotiating shoots, digital imaging, "tools and techniques," devloping your own personal style of photography, keeping records, legal issues, fighting censorship, and where to meet models. As I read the book, I got a sense that Gatewood was offering his thoughts on doing this kind of photography as well as advice on how to do it well. A lot of his personal stories are fascinating as well. He also spends a chapter (Four Promiment Masters) discussing other well-known fetish photographers; Annie Sprinkle, Micheal Rosen, Barbara Nitke, and Eric Kroll.

I would have gotten this book just to have some of the wonderful pictures, but the information Gatewood offers in addition to the photos make this a wonderful book to have, for anyone interested in this specific realm of photography.

4.0 out of 5 stars More for photographers than for the average person, August 12, 2004
By
TammyJo Eckhart "TammyJo Eckhart" (Bloomington, Indiana United States) - See all my reviews

This review is from: Photography for Perverts (Paperback)
This is a very well-written guide into the world of erotic and explicit photography but it is very much geared toward the person looking to pursue a career not merely to make menentos of their life. The book is detailed and specific and the average person may not understand some of the jargon. For the average person, if you like women that is, there are ample photographs, maybe even 100, and midsection of color shoots. The historical notes of important photographers and their struggles in an inmature sexual society is also very interesting for the average reader.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sweet pictures and tons of info, March 9, 2006
This review is from: Photography for Perverts (Paperback)
Charles Gatewood, also known as "the family photographer of America's sexual playground", has about 40 years of experience in his field. In other words, what he doesn't know about kinky photography is not worth knowing. It's probably safe to say that there isn't any part of the world of fetishism that he has NOT experienced, and with Photography for Perverts he shares these experiences with his readers. There is, according to him, nothing shameful about calling yourself a pervert, since to him the term simply represents individuals who are willing to live out their fantasies and desires in an environment where nobody blames them for doing so. Or in his own words:

"Whatever your persuasion, whatever your perversion - you are not alone. Together we are striving to create a safe, enlightened space for sex-positive explorations. This book will help you decide where you may fit in the scene, and also offers some wise, well-tested ways of getting there. Radical sex play is in the midst of a grass-roots evolution, and you are about to become an authentic erotic revolutionary."

Gatewood offers a tour of his own history and career, with plenty of pictures to accompany it, but also gives you all the tips and advice you could ever need if you yourself wants to starts photographing the world of kinky sex. The book doesn't contain any close-ups on penetrations or hardcore sex. Instead it focuses on different kinks, such as bloodplay, play piercing, extreme piercing, sploshing, and much more. This doesn't mean that some of the pictures aren't quite extreme - even though you'll always more extreme pictures somewhere else - but you won't find many taboos in Gatewood's world.

But then again, this book is called Photography for Perverts. So what do you expect? Pictures of fluffy clouds and cute kittens? No, I didn't think so.

Gatewood isn't just a talented photographer, he also knows how to write thorough and informative. The book has tons of pictures, too, even though it isn't simply a book about his pictures. If you're on the verge of stepping into that forbidden land of the perverted, then you definitely need a copy of this book.

Perhaps everybody does? I'm pretty sure there's a pervert in all of us. It's just that most people don't have the guts to admit it.
