Photojournalism: At its worst,

This review is from: Photojournalism: An Essential Guide (Hardcover)
Ok, so you want to be a photojournalist. If so, DON'T BUY this book! What you're looking at here is a poor attempt by a fine art photographer to define photojournalism. David Herrod simply doesn't get it. A quick browsing through the book will reveal that most of the pictures are just boring. Moreover, the quality of the prints is rather terrible, with blown-out highlights and washed out blacks. This made me question Herrod's claim of a fine-arts background.
The book starts with a brief Introduction (a sort of "How to be prepared and at the same time spontaneous", which is nonsensical) and then presents five so-called photo stories that the author attempted to do. While the photographs in these stories are decent enough for the local newspaper, they surely won't make it in the pages of more respectable publications, at least not solely on their merits. I'm sorry to say this, but these photos are simply uninspiring and boring. DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME with this book. If you're looking for inspiration, check out the Word Press Photo volumes instead. If it's advice you're seeking, try "Truth Needs No Ally" or "On Being a Photographer", or even one of Kenneth Kobre's' (admittedly overdone, and flavorless) volumes on the subject. |
