Editorial Reviews

Review

"The critique is well argued and firmly rooted in the work of Roland Barthes, Susan Sontag, Arthur Asa Berger and other philosophers and semioticians who have looked critically at visual mass media. ... The practical advice and lessons about best practices will be exceptionally valuable to anyone—student or recent graduate—who wants to improve and succeed in the profession of photojournalism. (Global Media Journal, Autumn, 2009)

"A well balanced introduction to the medium of photojournalism. While important ideals are explored in depth, and 'best practice' encouraged, Langton lends a certain pragmatism to the way in which the work is carried out in the real world. This balance is very helpful for any person with aspirations towards a career in photojournalism." (M/C Reviews, April 2009)

Review

"Loup Langton’s new book raises valuable questions about the ethics, history, economics, politics, and culture of the newsroom, addressing issues that are profoundly consequential to today’s turbulent media environment, and offering trenchant observations about the impact of these realities on visual journalists." Tom Kennedy, photo editor and former director of photography at National Geographic

"In a time of professional uncertainty, Loup Langton treats his readers to lessons that transcend the concerns of budgets and delivery systems. He reminds us that the foundation of great stories is the relationships between journalist and subject." Rob Finch, photojournalist

"Many of us take for granted the visual images that are served up with our daily dose of journalism. Loup Langton’s lucid book tells us where photojournalism comes from – culturally, technologically, and philosophically. At its best, photojournalism is a sophisticated and subtle craft, little understood by outsiders; Langton gives us the insider’s tour." John Carroll, former editor of the LA Times, Knight Visiting Professor to Harvard

Close to the bone... September 17, 2009
Format:Hardcover
Langton has captured the interior world and thinking of photojournalism. As a thirty-seven year veteran photojournalist at a major metropolitan newspaper I can report from experience that the chapter on newsroom culture, the chapter on ethics, and the chapter on the relationship between photographer and subject are particularly on target. They reveal the strengths and weakness of this profession and its practicioners. If you want to understand the business and craft, not just from a "romantic" viewpoint, but rather from the vantage point of those who actually do it, this is the book to read. You'll feel the issues in your very gut as you digest the meat and gristle and bone along perilous track these folks follow. Langton makes you wonder about some things - like why they do it, should they do it. It's good to ponder such topics from an informed stance, and Langton's got the straight story.

This, to me, is a successful book on photojournalism without many photos. It is a read - less of a visual journey. There are only 10-15 images, but this is welcome in that it does not present itself as a book on images, but on the backstory behind creating images.

A very great addition to a thoughtful reading photographer. I don't mean this in any derogatory way - but if you want to see images and master how to shoot, this is perhaps not the best choice for you. If you want to think, and think through the eye of a photojournalist, that needs to hop the flight and catch the event happening now - yup, this is the book.

Recommend this.

Both those who aim to be professional photographers and those who simply look at their work will enjoy this well-written book. In the words of the author, photographers and the editors who decide what we will see to illustrate a story, this field is explored from its ethics to the excitement of its Pulitzer Prizes. Here the profession and the photographers come to life. In an ever changing visual world, an anchor and a definitely very useful asset in my classroom as well.
