Product Description

Editorial Review

Although the end result is a rather impressionistic 21.25-by-15-inch picture of a tiger, this puzzle is a computer-generated collage of several hundred tiny (half-inch-square) photographs of big cats. Since each photograph is smaller than an individual puzzle piece, there is no way to sort the pieces by concentrating on color or dividing the image into convenient subsets such as grass, sky, fur, etc. The only thing that makes the challenge a little simpler is that it's fairly easy to immediately see which way a piece should be oriented. After that it's "grrr" all the way. --Richard Farr

These puzzles have brought me back to the world of puzzles. Plus they are actually worth putting on the wall when I am finished. These puzzles are actually not harder than other types of puzzles, but they require a totally different approach than other types of puzzles. However, they could be hard on some people's eye sight if one is not used to staring at small things. (I used to work in a microbiology lab, so I may be better trained for small detail work compared to most people.) For people accustomed to doing normal puzzles, one needs to unlearn tips and tricks that are meant for normal puzzles. For most photomosaics, I suggest sorting out the border in a pile, and then piles by color (this does not work as well for the flag, but you can still do red and blue even for that one). Then make sure to have your puzzles pieces so the small pictures are upward, none of the small pictures are upside down (atleast of the ones I have worked). Don't sweat the ones that you cannot tell which way is up. Without trying too hard, look for unusual patterns and textures. You will be amazed how many pieces you can notice go together if you do not overthink it. Don't try to match every piece at this point, stick with patterns on the pieces and develop some clumps. Not every piece of the same basic color will go together, but the idea is to develop clumps. Next, I do the borders and then match unusual patterns I noticed with pieces I saw before with the border. Now, I look at the main picture composite included with the puzzle and position the clumps approximately where they should go within the puzzle frame created by the border. It is much easier to match clumps of small pictures to the main picture composite compared to trying to find one small picture puzzle piece on the main picture composite. Then use the main picture composite to help you fill in the gaps. Concentrate more on the patterns (right-brain thinking) rather than trying to figure out the puzzle piece is part of a zebra for example. There are other tricks you can do as well, keep an open mind and try to find new creative approaches with each photomosaic. I love these puzzles.

This sucker is hard as all heck. My fiancee and I worked on it for 3 days straight and didn't get too much done. Eventually we quit because we had stuff to do so that we could graduate from the university. Just be warned - with so many little tigers and the picture on the box not matching exactly - this is a HARD puzzle.

2.0 out of 5 stars A Real Challange, July 11, 2000

I am not really a fan of this type of puzzle, while the end result looks good the effort expended is high. The only part of this puzzle that you can complete without refering to the box is the edge. For the rest of the puzzle you will spend hours comparing a particular piece with the small picture on the box looking for its position. Each puzzle piece has a portion of 4 small pictures on it, the colour and picture content do not indicate where it fits in the overall jigsaw. Be prepared for hours of squinting and a sore neck as you repetitivly search the picture. If you are a fan of this range of puzzles then this puzzle carries on the quality and style.
