The beginning of the book provides an overview of digital imaging and of the key aspects of Photoshop. However, the bulk of the book assumes that you're prepared to use Photoshop fluently. For example, you learn how to create a master digital image and how to implement traditional photography techniques. The book explains the Zone System, a process defined by photographer Ansel Adams in which you set up your equipment so that you take just the picture you want, with particular regard to exposure values. The book teaches you to apply this system to the digital world by mastering color spaces, device characterization, color management, calibration, scanning, resolution, histograms, photo CD, and Photoshop's image-transformation tools. The authors provide an overview of the steps from initial to master image and create three master images that they tweak using Levels, Curves, Hue/Saturation, and Duotone features.
The subsequent hands-on sessions let you fine-tune images using selections, layers, Adjustment layers, and layer masks to control and change color and retouch images. You later create eye-catching artwork using calculations, patterns, filters, and effects. Finally, as you create images for the Web and multimedia, you learn about 8-bit and 24-bit color, the GIF and JPG formats, color palettes, and transparent GIF composites. A chart at the back of the book shows when you can expect noticeable fading on printed output from several devices. --Kathleen Caster

The best book on Photoshop for photographers.,
By hcubell@mediaone.net (Boston, Mass.) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Photoshop 5 Artistry: A Master Class for Photographers, Artists, and Production Artists (Paperback)
If you are a serious photographer looking to be guided in the use of Photoshop 5 to produce fine art color photographs (e.g., through a Lightjet 5000 digital printer, an Iris printer or an Epson EX), this book is in a class by itself. It is so superb, it defines the genre. The other books out there are warmed over versions of the manual that comes with PS5. This book actually shows photographers how to use PS5 to accomplish the specific things photographers want(or will want) to use PS5 for. It is so well written that even a complete newcomer to Photoshop can follow the instruction and the tutorials.

This review is from: Photoshop 5 & 5.5 Artistry (Paperback)
If you're already a digicam owner and are beyond the beginning stage of digital image processing, treat yourself to 'Photoshop 5 & 5.5'. Published by New Riders (who do a first class job of printing and binding) 'Artistry' is, in a word, a BEAUTIFUL book. The techniques described are exciting and soon you will be producing work incorporating the described techniques. There are a lot of Photoshop books in print, and most of them are little more than a rehashing of the stock Photoshop manual. 'Artistry' though is truly in a class by itself. If you only buy one Photoshop book get 'Artistry' - I really can't say enough about it. It's a big book, profusely illustrated on very thick glossy paper, has lots of _practical_ info on layers and masks, and the several chapters on color space and color theory are fantastic (although not absolutely necessary to accomplish many of the techniques). The book includes a CD, and most chapters contain exercises that give you the opportunity to try, hands on, what is described in the book - the raw images used in the exercises are all on the CD! You will find a lot of uesful information about web-safe colors and creating limited palates which result in _uncompressed_ 72 ppi images that will weigh in at a tiny fraction of the full-palate image and will load at 28.8 in seconds rather than minutes. Compressed, they will load in a fraction of that! VERRRY Nice! :)))
