A Must Have for Photographers Using Photoshop,
By Marilyn Gaizband "Marilyn" (Annandale, VA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Photoshop CS4 for Nature Photographers: A Workshop in a Book (Paperback)
If you are a photographer, and in particular a nature photographer, who has been using Photoshop to optimize your pictures, then this book is a must have. Building on the author's previous knowledge of each version of Photoshop, it highlights the uniqueness of CS4 (and Elements). Photoshop can be a very intimidating program. However, this book is clear and concise. It discusses how to effectively and efficiently use Bridge to edit and catalog your pictures. It directs you on how best to bring your photo into CS4. It suggest a workflow that can be customized to meet your individual needs. It gives step-by-step instruction on techniques to enhance your photos supplying sample pictures to practice on. I have taken workshops with Ellen Anon and using this book is like having her in my computer room instructing me...from customizing my computer/printer settings to producing the finished product.

I enjoyed this book ... and it can be used both as a text from which to learn PS CS4 and a help reference once you get into PS CS4. The emphasis on Nature Photography is well thought out as the illustrations and text are well coordinated to show the best use of PS CS4 in this niche' area of photography. It is easy to read and that is a plus.

Most photography books, and books about Photoshop especially, suffer from the fact they are written by people who may be very good practitioners, but know little or nothing about organizing a topic for presentation and writing to be understood. Ellen Anon is the complete anthithesis of that type of photo author. She knows photography, she knows Photoshop, and she knows how to communicate. Having come from an academic background, she knows how to organize her topics and her thoughts in away that will be comprehensible for a wide audience. This capability has found its way into her photography writings. She provides clear and understandable explanations about such obscure Photoshop topics as layers, smart objects/filters, file sizing, soft-proofing, etc. She structures this all around two candidate workflows, taking the digital image from the camera to a finished print. I highly recommend this book.

This book is exactly what I needed for a new user of Photohop CS4. Ellen & Josh
Anon have created a book for Nature Photgraphers that really works for me. The book has been designed to not only explain how to use a feature but gives you the settings they use in their photography work. Even the CD in the back of the book is helpful to use. The majority of the book is for CS4 but they do a good job of describing the features of Elements as well as CS4. I have purchased several how-to-books recently and this is the only book that I would recommend out of all of them.

The first edition with Grey was a truly superior product. The new one may not be that superior. Mostly, the inclusion of Photoshop Essentials does not interest me, or make the book more valuable. Perhaps it is a gamble to see if that will increase the spectrum of purchasers.
So while the first volume was head and shoulders above anything else on the market, this one is slightly disappointing. But basically it is well written and valuable.

I feel that this is a great book for people who have upgraded their Photoshop to CS4. With all the changes in CS4, it is nice to have a reference from someone who has built on their pervious publications. I own all of ANON's books and they are easy to use. This book is also good for persons using Photoshop Elements.

This review is from: Photoshop CS4 for Nature Photographers: A Workshop in a Book (Paperback)
This wonderful book is laid out in well organized sections with easy to follow step by step instructions. It covers everything from basic questions about digital photography to how to create very specific effects that will make your nature images look spectacular. The visual examples offer great before and after comparisons. I am inspired to go out and shoot more images just so I can try out all the excellent techniques offered in this book. Thank you Ellen and Josh Anon for your thoughtful and comprehensive addition to my CS4 library.
