4.0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly strong book, October 20, 2009
This review is from: Photoshop Elements 7: Top 100 Simplified Tips and Tricks (Top 100 Simplified Tips & Tricks) (Paperback)
Adobe Photoshop doesn't include much material to help the user operate or run its excellent software programs (Lightroom 2/Photoshop CS 4/Elements 8) aimed for photographers: There is a lucrative market selling books targeted at digital photography hobbyists by its in-house writers like Scott Kelby (whose books are superb btw), Philip Andrews, et. al.

Unfortunately there is such a glut of such manuals (and they all claim to be comprehensive) it is easy to overlook a book aimed for the 'average' or everyday Elements 7 user--books like 'Top 100 Simplified Tips & Tricks.'

I also thought the book was too gimmicky from its unfortunate title (Tips? Tricks? "Top 100?" Simplified?)--surely I couldn't take this book seriously, better to keep struggling with the 445 page book I picked up from Amazon a few months earlier.

But I leafed through the pages anyway, casually, until I landed on Tip #24 "Change Images Nondestructively"--and I realized the author (Rob Sheppard) was talking about a dynamic that I had recently embarked on--shooting RAW for the first time after cutting my teeth on JPEGs for several months.

The writing was clear, the pictures complemented the writing nicely and intelligently, and it prompted me to look further into the book to make sure the Raw chapter wasn't a fluke. It wasn't.

The book has an understandable flow to it, and is assembled in a coherent way with the 1st 8 fragments aimed at organizing and preparing one's images; to the 2nd 15 part set that is an introduction to adjusting the image--to the 3rd section on Raw, etc. It is a gem of a book as these books go in that it is really, really understandable--and that makes it really quite special.

I bought the book that day in B&N, and it is at my side every time I work in Elements. I recommend it highly.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another Gold Star for Tips & Tricks!, September 3, 2009

This review is from: Photoshop Elements 7: Top 100 Simplified Tips and Tricks (Top 100 Simplified Tips & Tricks) (Paperback)
Like many of Wiley's Publishing Co.'s other "Top 100 Simplified Tips & Tricks" books, this one is also a true winner! The book is very thorough sharing tips & tricks ranging from secrets to organizing, simple to complex editing, layers, skies, removing unwanted objects, to what to do once you're done editing. There are tricks for everyone reaching those just a bit familiar with Photoshop Elements 7 to those who already know many of the tricks. What I like most about this book as well as the complete series is I always feel successful once I've been taught some of the tips or tricks. They are user friendly.

4.0 out of 5 stars Hoorah For These Tips, July 9, 2009
This review is from: Photoshop Elements 7: Top 100 Simplified Tips and Tricks (Top 100 Simplified Tips & Tricks) (Paperback)
Photoshop Elements 7: Top 100 Simplified Tips & Tricks (Top 100 Simplified Tips & Tricks)

"Top 100 Simplified Tips and Tricks Adobe Photoshop Elements 7" is 258 pages of need to know tips that will save time and avoid hazards as the reader uses Elements 7.

An attractively illustrated table of contents begins with Chapter 1, Organizer, tip #1 and continues thru Chapter 10, Get photos out of Elements 7, tip #101.

Rob Sheppard, photographer/author of more than 25 books, shares his tips, suggesting shortcuts and new spins on common editing and organizing tasks to those already familiar with Elements 7 software. He accomplishes this with a minimum of words in the popular "read less, learn more" style. The accompanying photos are true screen shots from Elements 7. And this is where a magnifying glass is a necessity since the print on these screen shots is very tiny.

Even with this flaw, I would highly recommend "Top 100 Tips" because this book has greatly expanded my knowledge resulting in quicker and better photo enhancements. The tips are excellent and well written for intermediate levels. Using a magnifying glass was definitely worth the extra effort. I enthusiastically give it four stars.
