hard to review a training dvd that is so buggy,
This review is from: Photoshop Lightroom Essential Training (DVD-ROM)
First off, the disk comes in a normal dvd case with a folded card that gives the chapters and times they last, thats it, no instructions, nothing else other than a brag page for the author on the back.
I tried to watch the dvd the first time, only to have it crash at the end of the first chapter. I downloaded the newest quicktime, and hoped that would help. I started the disk again, and it crashed at the end of the chapter again. This is where the real problems begin with this disk, I was looking for an interactive tutorial, what I got was a disk that is anything but interactive. You can't pause or fast forward, just start a chapter and watch. This makes it very hard to follow along with lightroom open and do any of the things talked about in the disk. I can't say how good the training is, since somewhere around chapter 5 the end of chapter crashes finally got to be too much and I quit trying to even watch any more of it. [...]

Chris Orwig is an awesome teacher!,

I'm sorry about that people whose disk didn't work properly, but Chris Orwig is an awesome teacher, all his training in [...] is spectacular, he makes everything easy to understand and gives very interesting pro-tricks.
The [...] tutorial might seem a little pricey but when you compared that price to the price of some other in-person classes, in a local college or academy, it is totally worth it and you will get a really, really good training.

THE SPEECH ON THIS DVD IS SO FAST IT CAN NOT BE UNDERSTOOD. YOU CAN SPEED IT UP EVEN FASTER BUT YOU CAN NOT SLOW IT DOWN. THE WHOLE THING IS WORTHLESS.
UPDATED: JUNE 25 THE AUTHOR "Chris Orwig" HAS NOT RESPONDED. Lynda.com OFFERED SOME "FREE" ON LINE TRAINING FOR 3 MONTHS WITH SOME OF THEIR "OTHER PROGRAMS?" MAYBE THE THEY THINK I WOULD BUY SOMETHING ELSE? HA! BLOW ANOTHER $100 BUCKS...?

I have used Lightroom 2 for most of my cataloging and image correction needs since I switched from Aperture. I wanted to have a program that worked on both PC and Mac. Now I view that as an impossible hope, but that's another story. I did the Lightrom training on the Adobe website and it was very helpful to get started and also bought a number of books. The books have been occasionally helpful as reference, and I needed intermediate instruction which I thought the Orwig DVD training is. It has been very useful in that regard. My main objection to this training DVD is Orwig's attitude, which I feel, is insufficiently oriented to TEACHING. Many times during the training, he has been in presentation mode, presenting his quite excellent work to the viewer. It is clearest when he is editing pictures of his own daughters, and he professes great love and delight in them. I applaud his fatherly love; indeed the world has too few fathers that love and chesish their children. So here he sets a good role model for the fathers among us. An added benefit.
Improvement is needed in the B/W section of the training. I had to consult the books to follow his training, and to understand and be able to apply the suggestions. It was interesting and challenging. Overall, it was a good choice to purchase and I would do it again and would recommend this to intermediate Lightroom 2 users. BTW, I am running ver 2.6 on my Mac Pro with Leopard, because of the many problems reported with LR 2.7. |
