If you're brand new to image editing and you've got a copy of Photoshop that you're trying desperately to understand, you should check out this book. It introduces you to the basic concepts of editing and acquiring images; understanding and navigating the Photoshop interface; and learning about resolution, sizing, and printing issues. Various file formats, including JPEG and GIF, the standards for Web images, are also discussed. Photoshop 4 for Macs for Dummies teaches you how to use Photoshop's paint, drawing, and selection tools, and the last section features an introduction to layers, color options, and text effects. Several four-color pages show Photoshop images and tell a bit about the editing techniques the artists used. It's hard to write an introductory book for such complex software, but these writers have done it. They're funny too, which helps if you're particularly daunted by the prospect of learning Photoshop. Deke McClelland is a popular lecturer on Adobe Photoshop and the larger realm of computer graphics and design. He has hosted the interactive "Video Workshop" CD that shipped with Photoshop Versions 7, CS, and CS2, as well as hundreds of hours of tutorial-style video training for industry leaders lynda.com and Total Training. In addition to his video work, Deke has written 84 books translated into 24 languages, with more than 4 million copies in print. One of the most award-winning writers in the technology market, Deke received the Benjamin Franklin Award for Best Computer Book in 1989. Since then, he has garnered more than 20 honors, including seven independent citations from the Computer Press Association. In 2002, he was inducted into the Photoshop Hall of Fame.

I have to say, the For Dummies books are excellent, and have helped me crack most of the features of Photoshop. I can't recommend this book highly enough.
