4.0 out of 5 stars Mixed level beginner/intermediate, November 19, 2009

This review is from: Photoshop For Right-Brainers: The Art of Photomanipulation (Paperback)
I am working my way through this book, every day a few pages and everytime I learn a lot, sometimes new things, somethimes other ways to achieve the same goal.I am intermediate PS and sometimes I find it confusing that the author explaines things on a beginner level and the other time he goes to the next step without explaining the how to, so he is not consequent in his teaching-level. This was especially the case with the explanation of the Displace Filter in Chapter I, but after studying the Displace-lesson in Photoshop Cafe I found my way out and learned even more than just what was in the book. So I am very happy with this book, find it very stimulating for the creative proces in myself.

The rightbrainer titel is a bit confusing, I don't know if I am a rightbrainer but I think it is a very good choise for al the right- and leftbrained people who are not afraid to look for more information on the web if they don't understand the explanation from the author. Don't regret bying this book and I have a lot of books to compare.

Sorry for making mistakes, i am Dutch, English is not my nativ language.

It's a slim volume, so I was a little skeptical of it's value. But every page is substantial. Al Ward knows his stuff. It's not for newbies, but this book will take your Photoshop skills to a higher level. Many of the techniques will work in versions of Photoshop prior to CS4.

I am a budding Digital Artist. I am retired, so I stocked up on great books, software, and videos because of my lack of funds to get a formal education. I am more of a hobbyist, so I am doing "how-to's". Internet tutorials are great, but I need to refer again and again to techniques and don't want to complicate my bookmarks. This book has some very good projects/effects to do with Photoshop that I wouldn't have thought of on my own. This book ranges from intermediate to advanced. The author assumes you know your basic tools; though, instruction is given in step-by-step fashion to enlighten the reader about masks, layers, blending modes, and more. Good book for CS4 and up.
