Good ideas, but all the CD's with the book are defective.,
By A Customer
This review is from: Photoshop 5 Type Magic (Paperback)
Most of the ideas in this book are well thought out, but when attempting them, the directions in the book are not in the correct order. The Photoshop "Actions" on the CD, enclosed with the book do not work, the publisher is refunding the purchase price and trying to get the writer to correct the problems. Publisher is very nice in resolving the issues, but why put yourself though it.. Buy another book instead.

The Starting Place,

If you are a well versed but not very advanced photoshop user this book is GREAT. It is a great way to move from a basic understanding of the functions in photoshop to a more advanced level. The effects do not have to be used on text and because of this I use this book as a quick reference almost all the time.

Decent reference for type treatments,

But if you are a newbie at photoshop you'll probably find yourself mindlessly following the concise step-by-step instructions without really learning how the sometimes complicated procedures produce their type magic. In such instances you may be better served by websites such as actionfx.com, which allow you to produce some truly jaw-dropping effects in seconds.

I found that this has been and still is an excellent reference to creating cool and interesting type/effects with Photoshop 5.0 or later. I have been using it for several years now and still keep going back to the book for additional ideas. I do not recomend this book to begining photoshop users, for the instructions are somewhat technical. I have used/modified most of the effects in this book and my clients love the work. For a reference I have found it invaluable.

I liked this book so much, I bought two more as gifts,

I found out about this book by accident, and I'm so glad that I did. What a great find! These effects are all great, and it's cheaper than buying text programs. I've already bought 2 more books as gifts to other graphic artists, and I'm sure you will benefit from this new found knowledge.

Very useful and easy to follow!,

This review is from: Photoshop 5 Type Magic (Paperback)
Adobe Photoshop 5 Type Magic is perfect for any aspiring web graphic designer. The book is well written and explains all the steps. There are many neat tricks and many impressive tutorials. The biggest problem I had with this book is that the CD was poorly designed. Some of the file names have slashes in them making them invalid for use. I have tried to contact the author but no success.

Incomplete Directions make this book a bad buy!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Photoshop 5 Type Magic (Paperback)
"Photoshop 5 Type Magic" lacks good direction. I bought this book and worked through many of the tutorials and found many dead ends throughout the examples. I returned this book, along with "Photoshop 5 Web Magic". I then purchased "Adobe: Classroom in a Book". Maybe I got ahead of myself by starting off with this book, that is my fault. But who's fault is it when the written examples are not complete?

Can't get anything to work,

I tried several examples from the book and couldn't get any of them to work! Either the book leaves out critical steps or it's just plain bogus information. What a joke!
