This review is from: Photoshop User, July/August 2007 Issue (Single Issue Magazine)
Photoshop User is the magazine you get when you sign up for a NAPP membership. You also get it's sister magazine "Layers" for 14 dollars more. I subscribed for a year, and while it wasn't a bad deal, I'm not quite sure it's worth your 100 bucks if you're an advanced photoshop user.
Don't get me wrong, it's a good magazine, but it's not aimed at the advanced user. Granted, you can learn a few tricks and tips here and there, but almost everything in the magazine is easily found on online or in the photoshop help. It's just not ADVANCED enough for my tastes. It seems like it's geared more toward begininng users and digital photographers than the advanced digital artist/graphic designer.
Honestly though it's not a bad value at only 100 bucks. You get two magazines for an extra 14 bucks AND access to their online portal filled with photoshop learning material and video tutorials. If you buy a lot of photoshop related products, you get discounts on those as well. But I keep finding myself skimming the magazine and setting it aside as opposed to devouring every article. It's also not much of a designers magazine either. Most articles are basic, focusing on basic tasks and things to achieve in photoshop as opposed to a magazine like "Photoshop Creative" where the whole mag is a feast for your eyes.
The problem with Photoshop creative is it's printed in england and is 16 bucks a pop. Youll pay almost 200 bucks for a subscription without the vast website filled with knowledge.
Would I recommend this magazine? That really depends on your design and photoshop level. If you're just starting out, this magazine and it's accompanying site will be a HUGE resource for you. They have a photoshop help desk where you can submit questions and a technician will get back to you within the day. That can be a huge help to a first timer. But if youre an advanced user like me, your money could probably be spent better elsewhere, like on design mags like Communication Arts or Advanced Photoshop. Though if you have the budget this is not a bad investment for only 100 bucks. I just wish it was more of a creative/designers mag instead of a technical how-to.
