Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Adobe is trying to stay ahead of the technology curve by making sure that Photoshop 6 has all of the features that a Web graphics designer needs, and then some. In fact, the combination of Photoshop 6 and its sister application ImageReady makes for a powerful Web-graphics design suite, and Photoshop 6 Web Magic shows how to get the most from it.

A quick introduction leads into 21 tutorials for doing specific Web-oriented tasks in Photoshop. In projects 3 through 5, for example, seamless tiles and textures are created from scratch, and used as background elements on Web pages. Other projects deal with creating elements that are designed to be animated, such as rollovers, warping text, and pop-ups. Some projects are oriented toward the newer Photoshop user, while others are more geared toward the Web designer, but all offer useful tips and techniques.

The sections on ImageReady and JavaScript include important, real-world information about the various file formats--and the advantages and tradeoffs of each--plus clear functional examples of common JavaScript code that every Web developer should know. Handsomely produced, each page is in color and two-column format, and the book lies flat on your desk. Graphics and screen shots accompany every step of every project, and the author writes in a clear, concise style. The accompanying CD-ROM includes all of the project files and related material, as well as some bonus material: additional patterns, shapes, brushes, and styles. There are also numerous JavaScript examples.

Photoshop 6 Web Magic provides valuable examples and sparks countless ideas. If you use or are planning on using Photoshop and ImageReady to create Web graphics, the tutorials in this book are fun, educational, and inspiring. --Mike Caputo

From the Publisher

Back and the best yet. Jeff Foster is considered one of the sharpest, most creative web designers in the business. When we approached him about helping us completely rewrite the best-selling Photoshop 5 Web Magic (he hadn't been a part of the book in that edition), Jeff had to take a hard look at his ferociously hectic schedule. We all agreed the book needed a complete revamp for Photoshop 6. Jeff redesigned the outline, and hunkered down to produce a book that takes the best of Photoshop 5 Web Magic and kicks it up a couple of levels. Everything in this book is completely customizable; so you can riff off the techniques using your own designs. The back-end comes from Photoshop 6 Web Magic, but the creativity and the final look comes from YOU. There's really no other book quite like this one, which is something to say, considering the dozens of Photoshop 6 books out there now and on the way. Feel free to dog-ear those pages as you take from Photoshop 6 Web Magic and develop your own work; that's what this book is for.

5.0 out of 5 stars Adore this Book!, March 2, 2001
By
Camy "Camy" (North Providence, RI United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Photoshop 6 Web Magic with CDROM (Magic (New Riders)) (Paperback)
I, as a total Photoshop novice, bought this book first, because the cover "caught my eye" and second because I need all the help I can get with Photoshop and for some reason this book seemed to be the answer! After reviewing this book from cover to cover and having time for just the first tutorial so far, I am amazed at how easy everything went and how my final output came out. Jeff Foster is an excellent author and I wish I had 1/100th of the knowledge that he obviously has in his head. One day I hope to be an Advanced user of Photoshop, but until then I will continue to rely heavily on great manuals and books written by individuals such as Jeff! I loved this book so much I bought a second copy for a fellow student as a birthday gift (tomorrow is her birthday, March 3rd!) and she was extremely excited when her copy arrived for her last week!

Many thanks for helping someone totally in the dark - I've started to see the light with your help! Keep writing, Jeff!

5.0 out of 5 stars Immediately Useful Ideas, February 27, 2001
This review is from: Photoshop 6 Web Magic with CDROM (Magic (New Riders)) (Paperback)
Photoshop 6 Web Magic is one of the best books on the market for presenting realistic and useful how-to's. By following the step-by-step instructions, anyone can recreate the exact project displayed in the book. A CD is included which provides everything a person needs to use the techniques detailed in the book. But the steps are written in such clear and simple to understand words that you could recreate the projects without the CD.

Embossing, background, re-touching, custom shapes navigation bars and animated attention getters are a few of the things you can learn from spending an evening with Photohop 6 Web Magic. These subjects are the things used in the real world. They can be put to use immediately on your web to give it a professional look. Even if you have never used Photoshop, this book has such good detail that you can walk right through the project without a problem.

5.0 out of 5 stars What I was looking for, August 28, 2001
By
Arnold Kling (Silver Spring, Md USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Photoshop 6 Web Magic with CDROM (Magic (New Riders)) (Paperback)
I am teaching a high school course in web programming. The course will cover HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and web graphics. The ideal book on Photoshop for this class would: 1. be focused on Web graphics (Photoshop is not just a web tool, and other books spend a lot of time on other aspects). 2. be clear, with bite-sized examples and step by step instructions 3. include as topics creating background graphics, animation, and image map rollovers 4. be inexpensive Well, three out of four is not bad. Photoshop 6 Web Magic is too expensive to require students to buy it. Otherwise, it is what I was looking for. The price of the book probably is due to the high cost of color reproduction. If your idea of a book is large quantities of verbiage, then you will feel very cheated here. But for my needs, less is more. I can use the examples in this book to give students a sense of accomplishment. This should be better for them than a comprehensive treatise that is less accessible. Should you buy this book? My guess is that you will like it more to the extent that: --you prefer learning from examples to learning from theory --you prefer a book that is organized around particular problems or projects to one that is organized around the features of the software --you really want to focus on the Web aspects of Photoshop 6.0 I fit that profile, and I am pleased with the book.
