5.0 out of 5 stars Adore this Book!

2.0 out of 5 stars Mediocre at best
This book is essentially a book on layer styles. 90% of the lessons are BASED almost entirely on slapping on a layer style. Rarely does the author show you how to make a style, most of the time you are instructed to use a default, or worse use one from the CD-ROM -this isn't learning!!

The book is well formatted and look's good on a coffee table. The cover is nice, the...

5.0 out of 5 stars Adore this Book!, March 2, 2001

I, as a total Photoshop novice, bought this book first, because the cover "caught my eye" and second because I need all the help I can get with Photoshop and for some reason this book seemed to be the answer! After reviewing this book from cover to cover and having time for just the first tutorial so far, I am amazed at how easy everything went and how my final output came out. Jeff Foster is an excellent author and I wish I had 1/100th of the knowledge that he obviously has in his head. One day I hope to be an Advanced user of Photoshop, but until then I will continue to rely heavily on great manuals and books written by individuals such as Jeff! I loved this book so much I bought a second copy for a fellow student as a birthday gift (tomorrow is her birthday, March 3rd!) and she was extremely excited when her copy arrived for her last week!

Many thanks for helping someone totally in the dark - I've started to see the light with your help! Keep writing, Jeff!

5.0 out of 5 stars Immediately Useful Ideas, February 27, 2001
This review is from: Photoshop 6 Web Magic with CDROM (Magic (New Riders)) (Paperback)
Photoshop 6 Web Magic is one of the best books on the market for presenting realistic and useful how-to's. By following the step-by-step instructions, anyone can recreate the exact project displayed in the book. A CD is included which provides everything a person needs to use the techniques detailed in the book. But the steps are written in such clear and simple to understand words that you could recreate the projects without the CD.

Embossing, background, re-touching, custom shapes navigation bars and animated attention getters are a few of the things you can learn from spending an evening with Photohop 6 Web Magic. These subjects are the things used in the real world. They can be put to use immediately on your web to give it a professional look. Even if you have never used Photoshop, this book has such good detail that you can walk right through the project without a problem.

5.0 out of 5 stars What I was looking for, August 28, 2001

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Photoshop 6 Web Magic with CDROM (Magic (New Riders)) (Paperback)
I am teaching a high school course in web programming. The course will cover HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and web graphics. The ideal book on Photoshop for this class would: 1. be focused on Web graphics (Photoshop is not just a web tool, and other books spend a lot of time on other aspects). 2. be clear, with bite-sized examples and step by step instructions 3. include as topics creating background graphics, animation, and image map rollovers 4. be inexpensive Well, three out of four is not bad. Photoshop 6 Web Magic is too expensive to require students to buy it. Otherwise, it is what I was looking for. The price of the book probably is due to the high cost of color reproduction. If your idea of a book is large quantities of verbiage, then you will feel very cheated here. But for my needs, less is more. I can use the examples in this book to give students a sense of accomplishment. This should be better for them than a comprehensive treatise that is less accessible. Should you buy this book? My guess is that you will like it more to the extent that: --you prefer learning from examples to learning from theory --you prefer a book that is organized around particular problems or projects to one that is organized around the features of the software --you really want to focus on the Web aspects of Photoshop 6.0 I fit that profile, and I am pleased with the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Only using 3% of your brain?, April 5, 2001

I've been using Photoshop for photo editing for years, but it turns out I've only been accessing a small percentage of the programs capabilities.Photoshop 6 Web Magic taught me to use all the new Web design features of the Phtoshop upgrades, so I can now make a dynamic website to show off my artwork. The lessons are perfectly designed to teach all the great new features of Photoshop 6: I've never had so much fun with an instruction book. But I would suggest that the complete Photoshop novice first learn the program basics (like how to open or create files, how to use the paintbrush, etc), or you will tear out your hair. I did run into a few places where I got lost for not having previous knowledge. I figured it out, but I can see where someone recently introduced to the program might not.Thank you, Jeff Foster, for expanding my horizons!

5.0 out of 5 stars Hands on - and coool stuff - in colors!, March 24, 2001
This review is from: Photoshop 6 Web Magic with CDROM (Magic (New Riders)) (Paperback)
This is THE additional book you will benefit from owning when working with Photoshop 6/Image Ready 3!
Large pages, deliciously laid out. Practical format to have between your monitor and keyboard! (It's wide pages stay open even if you lean the book towards the monitor, I have tried it, so I know!)
The illustrations are in colors, wow, wich is rare in the how-to-book-business. The illustrations are also very explaining, you see in an instant what you will get by doing what the text tells you to.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great collection of tricks, February 4, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Photoshop 6 Web Magic with CDROM (Magic (New Riders)) (Paperback)
I loved this book. I have always hated having to read pages and pages of text just to find a quick solution. This book doesn't do that. It shows me the steps I need to take to get the job done. The steps are very clear and there are screen shots to let you follow along visually. I can't say enough about how Jeff Foster has crafted these projects. He gives me the steps to do the task, but as soon as I see what he is up to, I start thinking about how easily I could apply these techniques to other things. I also like that I don't have to work through the book from start to finish. I can start with any project and within 5-10 pages have the result I was looking for. I highly recommmend this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book is NOT for Nit-Witts!, June 4, 2001
This review is from: Photoshop 6 Web Magic with CDROM (Magic (New Riders)) (Paperback)
I bought this book knowing that I would be challenged - as I always am in all of the Magic series books - and I was correct! This book has forced me to think in every chapter, even though I thought I knew alot about Photoshop 6 already.

Contrary to what other "reviewers" may think, Photoshop 6 Web Magic is NOT just an exercise on using Styles - and definitely not something anyone can just read through in an hour and understand all of the exercises!!

Don't be mis-lead... though Foster has laid out this book in a manner that's easy to understand, its NOT an easy beginners book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Truly "Magic"!, February 1, 2001
This review is from: Photoshop 6 Web Magic with CDROM (Magic (New Riders)) (Paperback)
A great addition to my Photoshop library. I loved working through Foster's "Photoshop Web Magic 2" tutorials, but this book really showed me how to utilize the new features in version 6. Great animation effects too!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Note from the Author..., February 12, 2001
By
This review is from: Photoshop 6 Web Magic with CDROM (Magic (New Riders)) (Paperback)
I just wanted to say hello and thank everyone for their comments about this book. There doesn't seem to be an author's comments area here anymore, so I need to jump right in here with the reviews - hope you don't mind!

First of all, I welcome and read all emails from readers - including comments, questions, problems or even tips and suggestions they may have. If you already own this book, then I encourage you to contact me directly and visit the online help areas and the CD-ROM.

This book is laid out for many types of readers and learning styles - whether you like to read the step-by-step instructions or just like to "look at the pictures" and follow along that way. We've included lots of screen shots (in full color) that support the steps in the text... something you can't really see while shopping online.

I will have our dedicated web site up and running soon at photoshopwebmagic.com, so you will be able to see some preview examples and feel like you can "thumb through" the book as if you were in a physical book store. There will also be a Members Community for readers to get updates and share their own Custom Styles and tips with other readers.

Thanks again for your interest!
