As an engineer I'm embarrassed for HP to have sold this printer; just about every decision they made on it is anti-consumer, that is, when they work right, which is temporary at best.

On paper it looks great: wireless, works with Apple's AirPrint, compact, has a scanner too. From a design standpoint though, they couldn't stop there. The printer is loaded with so much useless crap its hard to find the features you bought it for: printing your own material. Instead, the printer is loaded with pre-configured stuff to print off of the internet that they licenced as advertising! This slows down the printer so much getting it to print anything is a long, slow, frustrating process that usually takes 45 minutes or more as the printer downloads and updates useless garbage no one wants.

If you actually get it to print you'll be rewarded with the highest per-page costs of any printer I've ever seen! I'm lucky to get 15 B&W pages and a couple of color pages out of it before it needs ink again, to the tune of $75 worth of cartridges on discount.

The above problems are only if it prints. Most of the time it either prints out the same bogus error message about the trays not being in the right position, or it prints but the colors are completely screwed up and you have to waste the rest of the ink in the cartridges cleaning the heads again.

If you like taking hours to get anything printed right and spending hundreds of dollars on printer cartridges you'll love this printer!

The first one was DOA out of the box. The next one turned on, but wouldn't put ink on the page. Needed new parts. Spent a great deal of time with HP support blowing all my ink. They sent new parts but no replacement ink. Bought more ink, got it working, set it up wireless. However, it won't scan multi-page documents wireless. You only have the option to save single page scans. It needs to be direct connected for multi-page save options. But if you figure that out, and I did, eventually - through HP support - if you then direct connect it, then you have to go through all the wireless set-up again to go back to wireless. Ok, I was dealing with all that. But now it won't turn on, period. Total, it has printed maybe 50 pages, copied maybe a dozen, scanned maybe 20 pages. Now it's done. The HP printer it replaced had about the same low low mileage before it had to be trashed. I went on vacation and that fast-dri liquid ink dried up inside and no amount of HP support cleaning and swabbing solutions helped. According to the local geek squad, apparently a lot of these HP printers dry up and clog and nothing more can be done for them. I will never buy another HP printer. I never get much use out of them. I have a vintage Xerox phaser that is about ten years old and still running fine, I guess I need to buy one of their multi-function printers. I think HP printers are just a flimsy excuse for selling HP ink.

This printer sucks so bad I barely have enough politeness in me to describe it without cursing.

It is my second HP printer (yes, I made the same mistake TWICE!...) and let me tell you: if it was not for the poor souls who would loose their jobs, I'd pray the HP printer division would GO DOWN TO HELL IN FLAMES...
Man what a crappy piece of garbage!!!

What SHABBY design!! What incredibly POOR software architecture!!
These things are designed to DRINK INK, DRIVE THE USER INSANE and BREAK (right after warranty expires).

Honestly, if you buy an HP Photosmart of any kind, YOU ARE AN IDIOT waiting to throw your money away on EXPENSIVE INK and an INDECENT piece of hardware you will INEVITABLY need to service VERY SOON or THROW OUT IN THE GARBAGE.

I feel sad for the planet's resources wasted on putting these things together...

We bought the HP310a printer for my son to use for school. While he does not use the fax, he needs to scan and print documents. We wanted a printer that could do these things and also be an integral part of the family WiFi network. This HP 310a printer does the job.

Installation was not difficult, although it takes a very long time; about 40 minutes. We had problems at first getting the printer onto the network, but after a couple of tries, on she went, and it has been there ever since. That was the only glitch with this printer we ever had, and it may have been caused by some network glitch rather than the printer.

This is one of the modern generation of printers that will allow printing from the iPad! This is a big plus for us as my wife and I use our iPads constantly, and it is great to have a printer on the network to which we can all print. Further, this printer supports HP's "eprint" function which means that you can print to this printer from anywhere that you have internet access by emailing the 5MB or less document to the printer's hpeprint.com email address. Very nice feature.

This printer uses the 564 ink cartridges, which are very high quality cartridges that HP also uses for some of its better photo printers. This printer is, in fact, an excellent printer for photographs, producing vibrant, great looking photos.

The printer will print double-sided, and this feature actually works well. Neat.

So far our experience with this printer has been positive. It gets on and stays on the network, prints reliably and well, and does what it was designed to do without any fuss. We have not had any of the issues that some Amazon reviewers have complained of, so go figure. Recommended. RJB.
