Photosynthesis explains the process; the history of discoveries leading to current understanding of photosynthesis; and related issues such as acid rain, the greenhouse effect, and the use of basic materials that are directly or indirectly dependent on photosynthesis. The authors also explore the topic as an important key to our future. Symbiosis covers mutualism, commensalism, and parasitism, and gives numerous examples of these important partnerships. Further chapters consider the symbiotic relationships that humans have with animals, plants, fungi, and microorganisms and concerns that scientists have that "emerging diseases," such as Ebola, might become the world's next great plague. The authors also discuss the possibility of "alien symbionts" being introduced through space exploration. These books are well researched and interesting and the format is inviting for both general-interest reading and research. Scientific terms, which are defined in context as well as in the glossary, are highlighted in boldface type. The high-quality, full-color photographs have informative captions. Very readable introduction to photosynthesis. Includes some great facts like a single maple tree can produce 2 tons of food (sugar) in one sunny day. Could use some illustrations (e.g. cell anatomy and xylem and phloem, but photos are good. Includes a glossary, additional resource list, and index. I bought this book for my daughter and "we" both like this book a lot. There are a lot of diagrams/pictures and it is a book she has used as a reference book for school on several occasions. It's great to have on the bookshelf for any child - if you are attempting to foster an inquisitive mind and help them understand aspects of our wonderful world.
