Product Description

Loss of Highlight or Shadow detail is reduced or eliminated by the use of this 24" Digital Target which has black, white & 18 % gray panels that feedback through the camera's histogram providing correct exposure with predictable results. Created by photographer Ed Pierce, Westcott now offers a collapsible version, perfect for the Digital Image Maker both in the studio or on the go. The Panel feeds back through the camera's Histogram. Rather than using a single middle tonal value, you can customize your exposure based on the histogram spikes that record the highlight & shadows

5.0 out of 5 stars Add some magic to your digital shooting ..., July 15, 2006
This review is from: Photovision 24" Digital Calibration Target, Collapsible Disc Exposure Aid for Digital Cameras. (Electronics)
This is one of the greatest aids to the digital photographer that has come along in a long time. Just place the target in the same light your subject will be in, and then take a photo of the target while filling the whole frame of your viewfinder. Then look at your histogram for the shot. You will see 1, 2 or 3 spikes and nothing else. If you see all three spikes and they are all fully there, then you have the right exposure for the scene. If one of them is missing (or clipped - only partially visible), then you simple change the exposure and shoot again, and then re-examine the histogram. If you now have three spikes then you have reached a good exposure. But you can go beyond this point. In digital, if you move the highlight spike (the one on the right) as far right as you can without clipping it, then you will have a greater amount of data available in the shadow areas, which is always a critical area in digital photography. So you can shoot additional trials with different exposures to move the highlight spike further right.

The target folds up small, and you can carry it everywhere with you. I include several photos of the target at the beginning of each lighting set. Not only do I have a perfect exposure, but I also have the target shot available later for post processing and it can be a big aid in custom tweaking the photo (especially if shooting JPG only). But you also get a great benefit in RAW.

So if you are looking for a way to enhance your photographic skills, you can't go wrong with a tool that gives you the ability to get perfect exposure.

My digital photography instructor showed us the video demonstrating the use of the digital calibration target, and after seeing it, I just HAD to get one for myself. If you ever have to shoot in mixed lighting conditions, this is a MUST HAVE tool. It's easy to carry, and it has helped me to nail my exposures and white balance, making post-processing a snap.

If you are serious about digital photography, and you want to make the most of you DSLR, then this tool is a must have.

A great product, I've been borrowing one and then got caught without so bought my own. Worth the dollars for sure. My lab says the work is so much better color balanced, which make their job easier. always a good thing for the team. Allows easy exposure setting and white balance. I like the 24" size because it fits in most everythikng I carry. You do have to get close enough to cover your camera's field if you want a really good reading.
