Product Description

As a new updated model, the PHOTTIX® PLATO is a hybrid (wired and wireless) shutter release for cameras. The pack for the PHOTTIX® PLATO consists of a small remote control (transmitter), receiver and either one of the optional cables depending on the model of camera to be controlled. When used wireless, the transmitter and receiver can be pared by any one of 16,000,000 channels (Smart Code) within the working distance of 100 meters (320ft). The remote uses the 2.4 GHz band. The PHOTTIX® PLATO supports the following functions: single shot mode, 2 seconds delay, continuous, as well as bulb mode. The PHOTTIX® PLATO can be used with a wide variety of cameras - just plug in a suitable cable to the receiver. Uses AAA batteries. The receiver can be attached to the hot shoe of the camera (facing forwards or backwards), or simply be placed alongside. The remote's shutter release button functions similarly to that of the camera's: a half press initiates autofocus on the camera and a complete press of the button takes a snap. Pressing the "mode" button, you can choose on of the following modes: s - acts like a single press of your camera's shutter release, 2S - single exposures with a 2-second delay, continious - will cause the remote to trigger multiple individual releases, and bulb - for long exposure

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent wireless remote, May 18, 2010

This review is from: Phottix Plato C8 2.4GHz Hybrid Wired Wireless Remote Set For Canon 20D/30D/40D/50D/5D/7D/1D/1Ds/Mark II/Mark III/MKII/MKIII Using C8 Plug (Electronics)
Canon does not offer a wireless remote solution for the xxD models. I believe they do for other models in their lineup. Typically canon fans will only purchase canon equipment (lenses, flash, etc) to keep their equipment "pure".

However when there isn't even a Canon option, we must turn to the aftermarket.

This product fits the consumer demand brilliantly. It's very simple:

a) Mount the receiver on the hot shoe, screw tightly in place.
b) Use the given cable to connect the receiver to the camera remote flash port on the camera body
c) Turn on both remote and receiver at the same time to let them sync.

The remote functions as expected, with 4 modes depending on the kind of shooting you want to do. You can do single-flash, multiple flashes and even bulb mode where you press once to open the shutter and press again to close. The remote shutter button behaves just like the camera's shutter button with a half-press focus as well.

All in all I'm very happy with this non canon product. The build is a tad bit plastic-y, but it feels sturdy and should withstand the test of time. I didn't try out the maximum range, but at 10~15 feet, I was having no issues.

Highly recommended.

Yes. I'm glad I research and purchased this one instead of the overpriced Canon one. I have not had any problems from it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A "Must have" for any serious amateur or professional., September 21, 2010

Wow, this remote is awesome! I purchased this for my Canon 550D, although I made the mistake of buying the one for Nikon. Make sure you know which model you need, since the plugs are different for each camera type. (see list at bottom of review) This remote worked perfectly right out of the package (once I had the right cable). With this RF remote, you are not limited to line-of-site like an infrared remote, making it easy to be IN the photo while easily concealing the remote since it works in any position and any angle. Even through walls or windows, up to a couple hundred feet away it makes taking photos easy without the limitations of an infrared remote (or worse yet, no remote). My favorite thing to do is set up the camera on the bird feeder and take photos from inside the house while watching through a window. Amazing! I found it very versatile, easy to plug in, lightweight and easy to throw in a camera bag, and extremely feature rich. You'll know the camera is receiving your remote command by the double LED blink on the remote that indicates the receiver is properly responding, because of the 2-way communication between remote and receiver. (An infrared has only one-way communication) Pressing the remote at half-shutter is just like operating the camera, where the lens will focus in the ready position until you fully click and take the shot. This lets you choose from single-shot mode, single-shot with 2 second delay, multiple shot mode (once per second continuously until you release the button), and bulb-mode which lets you manually keep the shutter open until you release the button. Even without a tripod, this remote allows the user to set up the camera on a rock or whatever and produce time-exposure stills without camera shake. Bottom line, pro or amateur, this is a useful and quality tool that works flawlessly. I love it!

Most importantly, make sure you have the right cable for your camera. While the base unit is the same, the cable must be compatible for your camera input. Here is a complete list of Phottix cable models and the camera compatibility:
