Editorial Reviews

Phox is a bunch of friends from the Midwestern circus hamlet, Baraboo, WI, a place where kids often drink poisoned groundwater and become endowed mutants. They make music that straddles Feist and Monty Python. PHOX beheld a demo reel of bedroom-recorded music that made Bon Iver and the Fray recording engineer Brian Joseph blush. Joseph produced the band's debut album at April Base Studios in Eau Claire, WI. Mixed by Michael Brauer at Electric Lady in NYC, their debut album is a school of simple folk-pop songs swimming amidst a chaotic eddy of rock, psychedelia, and soul.

Every song is well crafted and beautifully sung. Hard to believe it's a debut album. I'd love to see them live.

Phox covers a ton of ground in this album. Lush indie pop songs with provocative lyrics. Worth the spend and worth the listen.

I don't like to write reviews of music. Everyone has their own opinion when it comes to music, and those opinions vary wildly.
In general I am not a casual music listener. Music is a big part of my life and finding an artist I really like is a rare and wonderful experience. I have a special love for women's voices. I demo several nearly every day, and most of them lose my attention in less than a minute.
However, when I heard Monica Martin's voice for the first time, I had barely been listening 10 seconds when I suddenly snapped out of my stupor and found myself ordering Phox's album. Monica just has one of those voices that stands out from the rest as effortlessly beautiful, and the band of music around her compliments her perfectly. I really cannot find fault with this band. For me they are perfect. It's been nearly a month since this album arrived at my door, and i don't think I've listened to anything else since. An easy five stars!

One final note, though it is irrelevant to their music. Monica Martin is absolutely gorgeous!

Beautifully crafted chamber pop that defies convention without getting weird. Acoustic instruments and layered harmonies provide the perfect platform for the smoky lead singer Monica Martin. This is really beautiful stuff; I hope to hear more from these guys!

Amazing vox, backed by very thoughtfully orchestrated components, including (variously) piano, keyboard, banjo, bass guitar, guitar and horn(s). The dynamics and cohesion of the band are very impressive.

I discovered this band today and listened to their entire debut album on Spotify. Needless to say, I fell in love with the band and had to order their album on vinyl. If you're a fan of bands with female vocalists, violin, clarinet and piano you will love Phox.

Really love the energy, creativity and variety that this group puts forth. I've seen them live twice and just heard about another local appearance next month. I think I need to see them again.

This was a happily accidental find.

I happened to hear a single track, "Slow Motion", on a favored public radio station while on a long ride home. I am supremely thankful for the happy accident. PHOX provided the soundtrack for the remainder of my fall and early winter -- it has continued to sustain me as the cold of January presses in. I share this album with all that will indulge because I find it to be defensibly excellent. Monica Martin's voice, while the band's secret sauce, is not the only hook: talent is strong throughout. Her voice is clear, thoughtful, and full of emotion -- initially reminding me of an early Sarah McLachlan sans the A.S.P.C.A. baggage. I find myself compelled to seek this band, and all of its work, out wherever I can find it. A brilliant first album.
