this is a great book for medical and emt students who wish to not only learn the methods of pre-hospital life support but also to understand it. the book is divided into seventeen chapters covering the basics of trauma life support according to the injured systems such as "head trauma , spinal trauma , shock and fluid resuscitation etc..." . each chapter starts with a scenario of a trauma which "teases" the reader to pay attention. all chapters begine with the physiology of the injury and it's various implications on all the systems. continuing with the pathophysiology , the types of injuries related , the asseassment ,managment , summary and review questions and answers. all chapters include lot's of helpfull illustrations and pictures. including anatomical ilustration , x-rays , real life injuries and step to step instructions to specific skills such as immobilization skills. the book also deals with subjects such as initial care of the child , initial care of the elderly, millitary medicine and about the trauma systems. I found this book to be extremly helpfull in understanding and teaching PHTLS and hope it will continue to improve the care admistrated to patients out side the hospital.

Great reference book that has a lot of detailed information not found in many of the books used for EMT curriculums.

This book is actually pretty good, especially if you are looking for focused DOT guidelines. The layout and presentation are excellent. However, its approach is different from how many EMS agencies run calls - that is, it's very non-specific in roles of the rescuers - my experience is that most agencies have very defined responsibilities for each person (patient person, radio person etc.) PHTLS is more of "Team Leader" approach with all rescuers able to do any skills. Obviously with different scope of practice rescuers on scene (EMT vs. EMT-P), this cannot be the case. Bottom line, most agencies want you to carry this card so it's a good book to own.
