For long time Hall and Oates fans, this release from John is way overdue. Overshadowed by Daryl since the release of Voices and the commercial success that followed, John has long been content to sit in the background and to contribute his two tracks to each album. To the hardcore H & O fans, those tracks often left us longing for more. Now we have it. This is a great album, there is just no other way to put it. It's funky, it's soulful, it's smooth and it may be the most consistent release out of Daryl and John in nearly 20 years. It kicks off with the song John is featuring on the current Hall and Oates tour "Color of Love". This is a great little funky track and if doesn't get you moving you're dead. Other highlights for me include It Girl, All Good People and the title track. The title track pays tribute to some of the great R and B artists of the past and it has a very Earth Wind and Fire feel to it. Now that Daryl and John are back on top with the number one "Do It For Love", expect to hear more out of these guys and all I can say is it's about time. I don't know what happened to the soul in music in the last decade, but someone sure needs to bring it back and these guys can do it.Don't hesitate, buy this one today and I look forward to the next release from John, but without having to wait so long this time!

Johnny can sing,

John Oates ( yeah the little guy from Hall and Oates)shines on his own. This cd runs the gamut from 70's funk to acoustic ballads. This is John's first full solo effort, he wrote a tune for the "About Last Night" soundtrack back in the mid 80's. His biggest success away from Hall and Oates was the song "Electric Blue" which he co-wrote for the band Icehouse. Phunk Shui if released in 80's would have many potential hits. Highlights include "Color of Love", "All Good People", "Unspoken" and "Phunk Shui". All the songs on the album are first rate, the one clunker in my opinion is "Go Deep" If you like retro grooves, smooth harmonies and musicianship, pick up this disc.

A GREAT thing that came to those of us who have waited long and patiently for John Oates to come out with his first solo release. If you love John's smooth, soulful, sexy voice, you will cherish this CD. Its worth the cost of the CD to hear All Good People, which is absolute perfection! I first loved Little Angel for the sexy way John stretches his vocals. Once I figured out it was obviously written for his son, Tanner, it became even more special to me. The lyrics are just incredible. I felt most of the CD was an amazing journey inside John's head. I think great music came out of great happiness in life. Way to go, John!

John Oates, the quiet half of Hall and Oates, the most successful rock duo ever, has released an amazing collection of "phunky" songs. It's the type of CD that gets better and better and better with each play!

John Oates debut CD has finally arrived! John, the dark haired one of Hall & Oates, the most successful Duo of all time, steps out, in this long overdue solo effort. This music reveals a more personal side of Oates. Notable tracks on this collection are, " Color Of Love", "All Good People" and "Love In A Dangerous Time". For those of us who experienced our rites of passage in the late 60's and early 70's, this musical journey harkens us back, to a time, when our universe exhibited a kinder and more optimistic spirit. If you yearn to revisit those feelings, this CD will transport you there. Oates is a humanist at heart. While this CD will probably not scream up the charts, it is a sincere effort and deserves to be heard. Pickup a copy and see if you agree.

More "Shui" than "Phunk",

"Phunk Shui" is the title of the new solo effort by John Oates. The production reminds Hall & Oates fans of songs like "War of Words" and instrumentation similar to lighter Oates-penned songs such as "Change of Season" and even "Southeast City Window". In other words, a very unpretentious, pleasant album with upbeat messages throughout. The only exception, really is "Mona Lisa's Eyes" a bonus track on the import version.John's vocals are good throughout, the musicianship is good as well as the consistent beat--the only exception being the title track which picks up the pace. John wrote "Little Angel" for his son Tanner and "Beauty" for his wife Aimee. Best songs are "Color of Love" and "Love In A Dangerous Time". All in all, it's a good listen and better if you're a Daryl Hall & John Oates fan. Personally, I expected a more polished, energetic production but it's still a good effort.

John's new album is definetly a peice of work. I'm enjoying it very much. This album contains quite simply the best version to electric ladyland to date. Jimi Hendrix would be floored..

Oates Goes Solo,

Fans of John Oates' work as part of Hall and Oates will enjoy this first solo album by the sometimes silent partner of the most successful duo in pop history. The sound is on the funky side although the ballads bring to mind Oates' contributions to the 1997 Hall and Oates album "Marigold Sky" and the organic, stripped down sound of the sessions as a whole suggests Hall and Oates' "Change of Season" album.
