3.0 out of 5 stars Good things to come
The P Kings first album is a rare and welcome fusion of pop/r&b/jazz. The production is clearly the weakest point of this debut, but cleverness and emotion still poke their heads through with seeming materful ease. Lyrically poignant, and musically fresh, it's a welcome addition to any pop music library. Although this is a promising debut, the second album (not...

Great musicianship, strong melodies, thoughtful lyrics: The Philosopher Kings have it all. From the first time I heard the album in it's entirety, I was struck by what an exceptional sound it had. The Philosopher Kings are totally unlike any other band I've ever heard. Their music is essentially pop layered with jazz instrumentals, occassional rock guitar elements, and a soulful qualitye courtesy of Gerald Eaton's powerful voice. Overall, the album has a sort of dark, moody feel to it which I like, and which apparently sets it apart from their follow-up release. While I haven't yet had a chance to listen to Famous, Rich and Beautiful, the tracks I've heard so far are pretty impressive.

What really sets this Canadian band apart, in addition to it's unique blend of musical styles, are the lyrics. Most of the songs on the CD are about love, betrayal and heartbreak - common themes in popular music which The Philosopher Kings express in a decidedly uncommon manner. The lyrics are truly original and worth really listening to. All the songs on this album are really good and worth a listen. My favourite song however remains the first PK song I ever heard, "Charms." In my opinion, it encapsulates all the best qualities of the band's music, not to mention it's downright sexy! In short, I think the CD is great and The Philosopher Kings are a talented group that deserves a lot more credit.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful discovery!, November 23, 2002

I was browsing in a used CDs store, came across this CD, and thought "With a name like 'Philosopher Kings,' I've got to check them out!"
Taking a look at the front cover with the upright bass did it for me... I had to give them a listen.
A quick ten-minute preview through the CD there at the store, and there was no doubt I was walking out with it... what a gem!
Somewhere between intelligent pop/rock & soulful jazz with a touch of funk, it was a joy on first listen through, but has also continued to grow on me.
Now that I know they've got another CD available, I'll *have* to get that one too...

5.0 out of 5 stars This is where John Mayer starts from, June 2, 2007
This review is from: Philosopher Kings (Audio CD)
I have loved this album for a long time. This is the album that made me interested in John Mayer and Maroon 5. I bought both of their albums, because they reminded me of TPK. So if you like John Mayer - go back to the source - you will not be disappointed.

everyone who's anyone should check this out. It is kind of contempary pop-jazz with quite a lot of flair. I am surprised that most people don't seem to know about this band, and I really hope they come out with another cd. Everything on here is very strong, very original work. I am so glad I discovered this cd, and if you check it out you will love it too. There is nothing bad about it, so just get it already. if I could compare them to anyone, which is quite hard, I would compare them to the Red Hot Chili Peppers, only disciplined, sophisticated, and if anything just sounding way more "there" than the Chilis do (of course i am a rhcp fan, but i have to say the philosopher kings have a way cleaner sound, you know?) maybe the comparison is stupid, but its all I can think of. Just get the flippin cd!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Delicate Sound, July 11, 2000

Loved the jazzy sound from the first time. Works great as gentle background music. Those musicians from the jazz scene became what I think is yet one of the best Canadian group. Gerald Eaton's voice is no less than astonishing. The only negative point would be the lack of musical dynamism, though you can remedy this problem with their live performance, One Night Stand, one of the best live album I've heard.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not Your Usual Jazz CD, April 13, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Philosopher Kings (Audio CD)
I first was turned onto the Philosopher Kings a couple of years ago by a friend. Since then, it hasn't been hard to turn my family and friends onto their music. PK has a unique, funky sound that allows people who dislike jazz go out and buy the cd. However, seasoned jazz listeners will enjoy this cd as well. It should be a staple in anyone's music collection.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice Urban jazzy sound, January 13, 2000
By
This review is from: Philosopher Kings (Audio CD)
I bought this CD after hearing that the Philosopher Kings were Michelle Shocked's back-up band for her New Years Show here in NYC. They have a great sound. Its light, urban, jazzy and modern. Think background music for a cocktail party. If you enjoy this music, but want a harder edge, try "Lake Trout".

This is one of the best CD's a have bought this year. I heard them perform a clip on CNN, and after searching everywhere, finally found the CD. It was worth the wait, this is such a good CD. If you like jazz, anything slow, anything a little mellow, this is a great album and I can all but guarantee you will like it. Please buy this CD so they take off in ther US - They deserve it.!!
