Book Description

L-Edit is a CAD tool, specifically a layout tool for VLSI Design. It consists of a set of software tools that produce the final manufacturing specifications for a chip design. All matters pertaining to the geometry of the layout, its precise dimensions, and design rules for conforming to desired specifications are included. L-Edit is not a stand-alone product; it is intended to be used in conjunction with a main text. A tutorial comes with the software tool showing the student how to do CMOS chip design using these tools. ..VLSI design is done on the computer. It isnt very useful to look at the pretty four- color plates that adorn textbooks on the subject. Short of allowing the student to send their chop design to a foundry to be fabricated, this product gives you everything else the big boys do in the real world. Up to now, the only programs similar to L-Edit were available on workstations. Schools have to pay a great deal to purchase and maintain site license software. L-Edit runs on the PC with minimum system demands. Students will not need to wait for a seat or stand in line to use the workstation. The students can do real design anywhere at any time.

This review is from: Physical Design of CMOS Integrated Circuits Using L-Edit (Hardcover)
This book shows how to use the L-Edit computer program. The program is intended to be very simple so that students can learn how to use it in a short time. It is for designing MOS digital integrated circuits. Students with the basic knowledge gained from using this simplified program will find the next step of learning the more complex programs used in industry a less painful experience.

1.0 out of 5 stars How a perfect limitation about 3000 objects..., March 29, 2002

This review is from: Physical Design of CMOS Integrated Circuits Using L-Edit (Hardcover)
Using the software along this book, students could only design very small logic, e.g. Xor, Nand, Nor. Insructor usually required students to design a basic 8-bit ALU layout in a class project assignment, so this book don't really help students to solve problems. And this book doesn't let us know how to revise the extracted file in order to simulate the designed circuit. I suggest this book should provide an additional chapter to cover the simulation part and pull-up the limitation to a reasonable degree.....at least a basic 8-bit ALU...

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction to IC design, September 24, 2002

This review is from: Physical Design of CMOS Integrated Circuits Using L-Edit (Hardcover)
This book does a great job of taking designers through the steps to tape-out for fabrication, and provides lots of helpful details on L-Edit usage. Several members of our design group also learned L-Edit in school, and we still use it now for its PC platform flexibilty. The learning curve is shallow and it's a great option even though Cadence and other tools are available.
