About the Author

Jerry S. Faughn earned his doctorate at the University of Mississippi. He is Professor Emeritus and former Chair of the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Eastern Kentucky University. He is coauthor of a nonmathematical physics text; a physical science text for general education students; and (with Dr. Serway) the high school textbook PHYSICS, published by Holt, Rinehart and Winston. He has taught courses ranging from the lower division to the graduate level, but his primary interest is in students just beginning to learn physics. He has been director of a number of NSF and state grants, many of which were devoted to the improvement of physics education. He believes that there is no greater calling than to be a teacher and an interpreter of physics for others.

First may i say i hate science. But the book helped me understaind the subject much better. The charts that are in the book organize the information so that studing is easier. I have used this book in my science class and over all i must say that it was a good choice of the teacher to use this book. The price is about equal to other text books on this subject. In closeingthe book is not one that you will sit down and read for fun, but if any teachers read this, it is a good choice for use in your class. It helped me, a person with no science background, understaind the subject and gain an love for the course.

I have no idea why this thing is so expensive--especially as a softcover! This book will not hold up for longer than a semester unless you really baby it. Even so, I had no choice since this book was required for a college course.

The text itself is excellent: the material is written in colloquial english, not scientific/mathematic/geek speak. The concepts are broken down to make sure you understand what is being taught, and each lesson builds logically on another. Each chapter is broken down into bite size pieces for easy study, and the end of each chapter features key words, equations, and study questions.

Unfortunatly, math is necessary to fully understand science. But the math in this text is fully explained and requires no more than a fundamental understanding of Algebra. Throughout the text there are exercises with the answers fully explained to help you work the problems. I am mathematically challenged, but I got an A in this course and never felt i was drowning in math.

Overall, I found the course enlightening, and this book was instrumental in enabling me to get an "A". There are some very cool things to learn that help you better understand the world around you. The book covers Physics, Chemistry, Geology, and Astronomy, without going too deep or shallow. My copy is too trashed to resell, but I think I may review it's tattered pages from time to time.

If this book wasn't required for the course, I never would have paid this much for a softcover book that I didn't intend to use daily. But the author's couldn't have done a better job with the text itself.
