Book Description

He's a washed-up soap opera star in rehab ... again. She's divorced, unable to accept or keep love. They meet in group therapy. They find ... each other.

This is a Bartholin Book. All Bartholin Books are DRM-free.

About 8,000 words.

I'd arrived a little early, eager to grab a seat with my back to the last of the setting sun which streamed into the big office with blinding ferocity.

"Hello, Karen." Dr. Anna Frankel's greetings were as neutral as she was. Did she even like me? I doubted it. Hell, I didn't even like me.

Like so many of L.A.'s trendy, she kept her office a planet-friendly too warm in summer, too cool in winter. I snagged a fabric chair facing the door. Tonight my bare legs would not be glued to my vinyl seat at meeting's end.

Right at 7:30 a guy about my age sauntered in, his gait purposefully drawing the eye of everyone in the room. Could that be—it was. Adam Rhodes from the recently-ended soap To Live, To Love, its resident twenty-something bad boy with the facial planes and cheekbones adored by the camera and every female character from teen to matriarch.

First a celebrity at group therapy, then a second, greater shock: The tabloids at the grocery store check-out were accurate when they announced he was in rehab.

He paused to nod at Dr. Frankel as if he were acknowledging applause. He was thinner than he looked on television. While his long hair wasn't as perfect as on the show, the snug fit of his jeans was.

Adam Rhodes slouched in the tan vinyl chair nearest the windows. Sunsets didn't bother people with $500 sunglasses and faces more beautiful than any of us on our best days. Just what us losers needed, a messed-up TV heart-throb.

"It's time," Dr. Frankel said. "Mr. Rhodes, I'd like you to meet the Tuesday-Friday therapy group, T F for short. You'll learn their names."

We chorused polite greetings, accepted with the merest head bob. His chair remained well outside our loose circle.

"Mr. Rhodes, the T-F group will accord you the same complete confidentiality and discretion as anyone else. We recognize it's a great concern to you—as it is to all of us. It's a basic tenet of this group."
