It is generally recognized that the study of the excitations of the nucleon to the N* excited states can shed light on the nonperturbative aspects of QCD. This can be pursued rigorously in the next few years, when the experiments in Hall B at the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF) will drastically improve the data in the so-called resonance region. The interpretations of the forthcoming data in terms of the N* excitations within the context of nonperturbative QCD require close collaboration between experimental and theoretical efforts. To facilitate the development of research direction, a joint CEBAF/INT workshop was held at the Institute of Nuclear Theory in Seattle from 9 to 13 September, 1996. The proceedings of the workshop contain papers which focus on: N to N* transition form factors predicted by the available QCD-based hadron models; reaction theories of N* excitations in photoproduction and electroproduction of mesons; and new experimental results and the complementary experimental opportunities at new facilities around the world.
