Captivating!,
By N. Ali (Australia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Physics for Scientists and Engineers: Standard Version (Hardcover)
Reading university course material generally involves wading through dry, factual textbooks which fail to spark interest. I was pleasantly surprised by Tipler. Very pleasantly, in fact.
The content is divided into sensible sections (Mechanics, Oscillations and Waves, Thermodynamics, Electricity and Magnetism, Light, and Modern Physics) and the layout very clear and readable. I felt that the writing was excellent. Concepts were explained clearly, with formulas and worked examples throughout. The worked examples, where long, even included numbers steps and explanations along the way. This being a great boon to engineers, who, let's admit, may want to skip over derivations and see how things are worked out. One of my favourite things about this book is the clear, modern illustrations and the end-of-chapter reviews, which contain all the important formulas, theories and constant for handy reference and to refresh your memory. All in all, this book is one of the better things on my prescribed reading lists, and is so captivating that I do in fact this book for both business and pleasure.

If you want to learn physics, this is the text you should use.
The explanation of all of the concepts in this book is presented very well. Chapters are opened with some example of how the concepts in the chapter are applied in other fields of science and engineering. Then, the book proceeds to explain the concepts. The writing is concise and specific, but also very informative and interesting. Reading the text is natural, and doesn't feel like a herculean effort. Examples in the book are worked out thoroughly and neatly, so they are easy to comprehend, as well as being illustrated with function and well above average images. In addition, the book includes sections that, while not immediately necessary to the understanding of physics, provide more detailed explanations of application or more advanced concepts, for those who are interested. The thing is, they aren't necessary to the continuity of the book. Each chapter is ended with a page of important formulae, and a set of exercises. The exercises are particularly well organised into three categories according to difficulty, which provides new students to practice their basic understanding, intermediate students to test their understanding, and advanced students with more of a challenge. I highly recommend this text to anyone learning physics, regardless of what primary text you use. It is a valuable resource, and will aid you greatly.

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)

This was an excellent purchase. Shipped fast, arrived promptly. A great substitute for a brand new textbook. Same material, a fraction of the cost. Plus older textbooks always have entertaining current events references that make me laugh.
