5.0 out of 5 stars outstanding introduction to the science of exercise, May 23, 2008
This review is from: Physiology of Sport and Exercise, Fourth Edition (Hardcover)
After a lifetime of interest in learning about exercise, I finally got this: the proper textbook on the subject. Recommend this book for everyone interested in learning what science has found about exercise.

This book is the opposite of all those endless magazine and internet exercise tips. The authors have themselves tested and compiled the best experimentally tested findings on the causes and mechanics of exercise and the human body. Why does muscle get stronger? Can you get faster? How? Why?

Book is long and can be a bit technical. It is a textbook on exercise. It is not the end of the topic. But if you want to look at and learn about sports from the perspective of tested results, written by maybe the best teachers and minds in the field: get this book. Maximum recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fine college textbook, September 6, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Physiology of Sport and Exercise, Fourth Edition (Hardcover)
I had a good time reading this very fine textbook on exercise physiology from cover to cover. It was at the level of detail and academic rigor that I was seeking. I understand that this is an introductory text used at the Kinesiology Department of the University of Minnesota. I am not an athlete, but rather an ordinary layperson just wanting to exercise to get fit. While the research cited in the text focuses more on athletes, there was plenty of information for non-athletes.
The book presents a great deal of technical information, but it uses a lot of modern visual techniques to help that information go down easy. The book is full of charts, graphs, diagrams, and pictures which are great help to a visually oriented person such as myself. I found other visual elements very attractive, such as layout, text boxes ("in focus" and "in review" summaries), appropriate typefaces, and so forth.
The authors go to some effort to make the material interesting and manage to convey their excitement about their topics to the reader. I highly recommend this book, whether you are a student or an educated layperson wanting to become even more educated on the most important subject of exercise physiology.

I bought this for a class I am taking, but as I started reading it I quickly found it so interesting and well done that I would not stop.
Ended up reading the whole book over a couple of days. It has a lot of excellent info and great illustrations.

5.0 out of 5 stars execellent, January 14, 2009
This review is from: Physiology of Sport and Exercise, Fourth Edition (Hardcover)
Great leevel of detail. I was looking for a book that provied detail explanations on how things work and the reasons and proofs for recommendations, a lacking quality in many related books. Having an understanding of how and why givesme the freedom to tailor my programs with much more accuracy.

currently using for a class, and the text is pretty solid and helpful. the caliber is geared more towards undergrad, so if youre a student or just someone who doesnt need an advanced degree in sports sciences, this book is a great starter. easy to read and follow for most levels.

4.0 out of 5 stars The first section (basic science) is very good, November 6, 2011
This review is from: Physiology of Sport and Exercise, Fourth Edition (Hardcover)
I had a chance of reading cover to cover this excellent book: what I found particularly well structured was the first part of the book (review
of basic physiology and anatomy related to the specific field of sports and exercise).Very useful at the end of each chapter are the review questions that allow quick revision of the most HY topics related to this discipline. Also very good historical introduction (lots of references pics etc..)

Product itself is great shape-I was upset that I paid an extra $12 for it to be shipped 2 day and it took a week to arrive.
However, Amazon is supposedly refunding my money, so we'll see.
