Book Description

March 1, 2003
These intensely personal and perceptive essays explore the author's life as a pianist - practicing, performing, teaching and writing - but they could be the thoughts and reflections of any artist. They recount the challenges, rewards and joys of her experiences in her chosen profession.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Montparker, senior editor of Clavier magazine, pianist, teacher, writer, and painter, relates her experiences with music and people in a thoroughly engaging way. She begins with comments on her love of nature, how she works, and how music is a comfort, and with letters and mementos. She continues with her experiences giving recitals and comments on audiences, preparation, and her love for chamber music. Turning next to her love for teaching and to teaching's rewards, she also describes her techniques for drawing the best from her students. Finally, she talks about her many interviews with famous pianists and the difficulties she had with those interviews. Returning home in the last essay, she longs for "the music of thrushes, Bach, Carolina wrens, Beethoven." Her essays will be enjoyed not by musicians only, but by all music lovers who want to be swept away by an honest and warm description of an artist's life and its trials and rewards. Alan Hirsch

More About the Author

Carol Montparker, pianist and writer, has received highest praises for her concerts, CDs, and four books on music.

From early childhood Montparker's identity, her passport, her core experiences were as a musician. Stories from her life in music are the material for The Blue Piano and Other Stories. Insights and wisdom from her years as performer and teacher provide the material for the essays in A Pianist's Landscape. Her tangential career in music journalism began with the writing of her Chronicle: The Anatomy of a New York Debut Recital, a diary of her own debut at Carnegie recital Hall in 1976.Glenn Gould responded to her book, "This is the most un-put-downable piece of music journalism I have come across in many years!" Thus, Ms. Montparker began writing along with performing--books and numerous articles (including 20 years as senior editor of Clavier, articles for The New York Times, Newsday, and virtually every music publication.)

Montparker has received hundreds of responsive letters, a phenomenon that has continued throughout her career as active recitalist and lecturer in universities, piano festivals and conferences, museums, libraries, and her own workshops. Audiences and readers have consistently reaffirmed her natural ability to address the essence and spirit of music-making. Carol Montparker is a Steinway Artist, and this coming Fall will start a new series The Composers' Landscape, workshops featuring the masterpieces of single composers, including her performance, lecture, and coaching.(Please see www.montparker.com for details.)Montparker maintains an active private teaching studio in Huntington, New York. 5.0 out of 5 stars Insight on Artistry, May 24, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: A Pianist's Landscape (Hardcover)
Carol Montparker writes with insight, warmth, and sensitivity. She has great feeling for the difficulties and rewards of the pianist's vocation. She expresses appreciation to the famous pianists she has interviewed for Clavier Magazine, and yet she speaks of her students with respect, also. Her insights into the challenges facing a pianist and her reverence for the art form make this book eminently worth reading.
