5.0 out of 5 stars Bernstein's Best Mozart, April 11, 2000
By
This review is from: Piano Concerto 15 (Audio CD)
This was Bernstein's first foray with the Vienna Philharmonic, recorded in 1966, shortly after his "Falstaff" at the ViennaState Opera, and marked the beginning of their celebrated lifelong collaboration. Bernstein did not record a whole lot of Mozart (alas, no complete opera), and this is arguably the best Mozart recording he made. This was the heyday of Decca's recordings of the VPO in the Sofiensaal and the balances are well-nigh perfect. Matching the superb sound are Bernstein's exemplary, very classical performances, contrary to stereotype. Concerto No. 15 is very fine, and this is one of the best recordings of the "Linz" in the catalogue. A must-have for Bernstein and Mozart fans.

5.0 out of 5 stars A sonorous surprise!, November 29, 2006
This review is from: Piano Concerto 15 (Audio CD)
Measure by measure this distinguished version of the 15th Mozart Piano Concerto still stands out as one of the spunky performances around this neglected K. It possesses vitality, austere elegance and sublime panache.

Bernstein was a formidable pianist who pitifully recorded less we expected. And this record consolidates him in his double facT.

In what concerns to the 36th Symphony, there are better perfomances avalialbe in the market.

Recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding, September 8, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Piano Concerto 15 (Audio CD)
This disc is a joy from start to finish. I think what jumps out at you is the quality of the recording, certainly state of the art for the mid 60's. This was one of Bernstein's first collaborations with the Vienna Philharmonic and I dare say one of the best. Bernstein shows off his pianistic talents and then conducts the "Linz". The sound from the Sofiensaal in Vienna is absolutely incredible. If you like these works, you really should have this disc. I have never heard the "Linz" symphony done better.
