5.0 out of 5 stars Ravishing Saint Saens 2nd Piano Concerto, November 18, 2010

This review is from: Piano Concerto 2 (Audio CD)
This is my very favorite recording of the Saint Saens 2nd piano concerto. Not only does Rubenstein have the delicacy and flair to bring it off, but here he is accompanied by Ormandy and the Philadelphia Orchestra. That and improved sonic technology make this a superior recording to his earlier account with Wallenstein and the Symphony of the Air. This is the kind of recording RCA had in mind when they spent a ridiculous fortune in 1968 signing a contract with the Philadelphia Orchestra. They knew what an outstanding accompanist Ormandy would be for their stable of Red Seal recordng artists like Rubenstein and Cliburn. The recording is dry due to the acoustics of the academy of music, but not unpleasantly so. The disc includes two wonderful encore pieces by Rubenstein along with a fine performance of the de Falla "Nights in the Gardens of Spain" and Franck's sadly neglected "Symphonic Variations".
