Competent but really nothing special, October 31, 2001
This review is from: Piano Concerto No 2 in B-Flat Op 83 (Audio CD)
This is just another recording of a classic work of the kind that record companies churn out every year. Obviously there are no big mistakes by either soloist or conductor, and the recorded sound is decent, but nobody seems to have anything special to say about ithe music and I don't remember any moments which distinguish this recording from dozens of others, either for rhythm, tone quality or expression. I sold this CD to a second hand store.
Recommendations for this work include Fleisher/Szell, Serkin/Szell, Buchbinder/Harnoncourt (available at midprice), and I have an energetic and involving performance with Backhaus and (I think) Szell on LP (could be Backhaus/Bohm).
