Editorial Reviews

Product Description

Arguably Britain s most well-known pianist, who recently celebrated his 60th
birthday with a series of concerts throughout the UK, John Lill first came
to international attention when he won the coveted Tchaikovsky award in
Moscow in 1970. Known for his aristocratic interpretations of Beethoven and
the great masters of the 19th and 20th century piano repertoire, Lill performs
all over the world and was awarded a CBE in the 2005 New Year s Honors List.

Review

John Lill is, without a doubt, one of the finest pianists at work today and
his undemonstrative appearance on the stage belies a fiercely passionate and
romantic temperament. --Seen and Heard International

5.0 out of 5 stars An Unexpected Gem February 7, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Perhaps it's due to low expectations, but I was very pleasantly surprised by this recording. I love the pieces and have several other recordings of them, and I'm crazy about some (most) of those, so I'm not quite sure why I decided to get yet another set. However, while I'd never heard of him, Lill is a strong and confident pianist who does justice to all the pieces. The recording balance helped; at first I thought it was odd, but over time I came to appreciate that it favored the piano rather than the orchestra, which was very refreshing and reminded me that it is a piano concerto, not an orchestral piece with some incidental solo piano music. It might not be my all-time favorite, but I would put it in the top tier and it is definitely worth it if, like me, you're a fan of the pieces.
