Editorial Reviews

This 1958 session by the Wynton Kelly Trio (aka the Miles Davis rhythm section) with special guests Kenny Burrell on guitar, captures fully the joy and blues feeling of Kelly at his best.

5.0 out of 5 stars Impeccable, August 16, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Piano (Audio CD)
Before his untimely death, Wynton Kelly was one of the jazz world's great pianists---tasteful, swinging, bluesy, a little block chording, a little modal. Best known for his accompaniment in groups led by the likes of Miles Davis, Kelly was outstanding in his own right. This session, his first as a leader, was recorded before he joined Davis. He is joined by two soon-to-be mainstays in the Davis group (Paul Chambers, Philly Joe Jones) and Kenny Burrell on guitar. Classic performances on '50s favorites such as "Ill Wind", the minor "Whisper Not" and "Don't Explain".

5.0 out of 5 stars The real Machine Gun Kelly gang, August 24, 2005
This review is from: Piano (Audio CD)
I first heard Kelly's unique style on 'Freddy Freeloader' on Miles Davis' 'Kind of Blue' classic. Here he teams with 'Blue' alum Paul Chambers on bass,Davis regular Philly Joe Jones on drums-and the great Kenny Burrell on guitar.Regardless of tempo, this is flawless-and well worth the price for its two takes of 'Dark Eyes',alone.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is one awesome CD, November 20, 2002

I am an audiophile. This XRCD2 recording is simply awesome. The music is outstanding, excellent, classic 50's jazz. If you like that era, this recording will take you there. Plus, the recording quality of this CD is magnificent. This is one of my reference CD's for testing equipment and cables. You can't go wrong.
