Impeccable,
By A Customer
This review is from: Piano (Audio CD)
Before his untimely death, Wynton Kelly was one of the jazz world's great pianists---tasteful, swinging, bluesy, a little block chording, a little modal. Best known for his accompaniment in groups led by the likes of Miles Davis, Kelly was outstanding in his own right. This session, his first as a leader, was recorded before he joined Davis. He is joined by two soon-to-be mainstays in the Davis group (Paul Chambers, Philly Joe Jones) and Kenny Burrell on guitar. Classic performances on '50s favorites such as "Ill Wind", the minor "Whisper Not" and "Don't Explain".

The real Machine Gun Kelly gang,

I first heard Kelly's unique style on 'Freddy Freeloader' on Miles Davis' 'Kind of Blue' classic. Here he teams with 'Blue' alum Paul Chambers on bass,Davis regular Philly Joe Jones on drums-and the great Kenny Burrell on guitar.Regardless of tempo, this is flawless-and well worth the price for its two takes of 'Dark Eyes',alone.

I am an audiophile. This XRCD2 recording is simply awesome. The music is outstanding, excellent, classic 50's jazz. If you like that era, this recording will take you there. Plus, the recording quality of this CD is magnificent. This is one of my reference CD's for testing equipment and cables. You can't go wrong.

Enjoyable and underrated,

I have enjoyed Wynton Kelly's piano for several years on various recordings, but only recently with Kelly out in front. This CD will probably not blow you away - you will just find yourself listening to it pretty often. It will put you in a good mood.Kelly BlueTrio in PersonLee Morgan, Vol. 3Sonny Clark Trio

WOW! If you like piano jazz this is for you. Each and every track is right on, no fillers here. Just about perfect, if I play this album continuously, after an hour or so they find me curled up in the corner drooling...
