Nice one-disc Billy Joel import, notable mainly for using the 4:33 single remix of "Piano Man" -- first time on CD. It also uses the edit versions of "My Life," "We Didn't Start the Fire," "Tell Her About It," "All About Soul," and "Just the Way You Are."

Collectors may want those hard-to-find single edits, and the disc is a good choice for beginners, but the more comprehensive "Essential Billy Joel" can be got for around the same price.

Billy Joel is the Frank Sinatra of a different era. I am an Audio Engineer/Producer.

That said, don't waste your money on this so called HD edition. CD audio is decimated to 44k, 16bit audio no matter the mastering. If you want high quality, you need to purchase SACD's or a DVD Audio format...both require something other than a CD player to listen to them. In truth the vinyl versions of Billy Joel would sound BETTER than this overpriced CD. The SACD's sound wonderful!

This high priced album is after your money, not your ears. Skip this.

This is a great album. Greatest hits 1 and 2 and the Essential 2 disc collection give us the unedited, full-length version of all the songs, which is really nice. However, it is nice to hear the edits for a change, and this album gives them to us: the shorter version of Piano Man, taking out about a verse and a half, and the shorter version of All About Soul gives us the great guitar work that is not in the original recording. I also like the version of My Life, its a little more rocking and moving without the high piano notes coming in until the very end and fewer piano measures between the verses. My favorite Billy Joel edited song, however, is I Go To Extremes. When i was a kid and the song came out on the radio, it pretty much had the first rocking piano solo, followed by 2 lines of singing, then the second piano solo (which rocks even more). At the end of the second solo, it goes back to Billy singing and the song fading out. I have tried to find this everywhere to get onto my ipod along with the great original recording and have been unable to find it anywhere. I figured when this album came out and I read about the edited versions that I Go To Extremes would defintiely be on there. It isn't :( But the rest of the album is great stuff :)

I lived in Japan for three years and can tell you that even there the made-in-Japan versions are more expensive than the CDs they import from abroad.
Japanese versions differ in two ways. First, the liner notes include translated lyrics in addition to the original (even when the English words are omitted in other versions). Often the Japanese versions have a page or two that gives a background introduction to the artist and their genre. The assumption is that these Japanese buyers did not have the benefit of growing up listening to these Anglophone artists on the radio, so they aren't familiar with the whole scene.
Providing these expanded liner notes adds the cost of the disc, so as compensation the Japanese releases frequently include a bonus track not found on other versions. In this case "The Stranger". ("All by Myself" on Celine Dion's 'All The Way' GH, "Is there Any Love in Your Heart" on Lenny Kravitz's GH etc.)
In Japan, the price difference may be in the neighbour of 4 or 5 dollars extra to get the domestic version rather than buying the imported version.
In North America the situation is reversed. The version without the Japanese liners notes is the domestic version, while the one with Japanese liner notes (and extra song) is the import. But the price gap becomes much more extreme. From this side of the pacific, buying non-Japanese is even cheaper and buying Japanese is even more expensive.

While it is true that most imports cost more, it's much more so the case with the Japanese release as these were more expensive to begin with because of the bilingual liner notes - a feature that most shoppers outside of Japan aren't going to find too useful.

If, like me, you already own Billy Joel's Greatest Hits 1,2 and 3, you don't really NEED this album, even though you might WANT it anyway.

If you just want to have a collection of his best songs in one compact package for the car or office, this is perfect for you.

It's got all the songs you sang and danced to over the years, including "Just The Way You Are"; "Honesty"; "My Life"; "Uptown Girl"; "An Innocent Man"; and "Movin' Out" et al.

An excellent "Beginner's Guide to Billy" for someone on your gift list.

I contemplated buying this specially mastered K2HD version of this album for a while, mainly because most of the reviews were not about the K2HD version but instead about the standard audio version. Well i now have have both standard & K2HD versions and without doubt the mastering on the K2HD is much better than the standard release. All the songs on comparison sound much better on k2HD .Their is more overall clarity. So take a leap like i did & buy it.

As a fan from the UK and not born around the era Billy Joel started in the 70's this is a great introduction cd featuring the hits but not a full singles discography.
Known mostly here for the huge #1 'Uptown Girl' the cd was refreshing for the range and styles displayed and a good way to get listeners interested in his albums which i did after this highlights package. Highly recommended.

100th best selling album of 2006 in the UK.

Fun Fact: 'Uptown Girl' sold over 1 million copies in the UK and is by far his biggest seller (over double the amount of his next biggest single) finishing the 19th biggest seller of the 1980's. The song hit #1 again when Irish boyband Westlife did a cover version in 2001, though this version didn't outsell Joel. The track is still common today at Weddings in the UK!

Album: UK#7 / Career album sales in UK: 3.2 million
