Biography

As one of Britain's most innovative and celebrated composers, Michael Nyman's work encompasses operas and string quartets, film soundtracks and orchestral concertos. Far more than merely a composer, he's also a performer, conductor, bandleader, pianist, author, musicologist and now a photographer and film-maker. Although he's far too modest to allow the description 'Renaissance Man', his restless… Read more in Amazon's Michael Nyman Store

Editorial Reviews

2004 saw the celebratory release of the special 'Nyman at 60' digipak editions of six of his most popular soundtracks. With stock of these limited editions now depleted, the albums will be made available as jewel case (remastered) editions. To begin with, his most successful soundtrack 'The Piano' jewel case version will still include the extra track 'The Heart Asks Pleasure First / The Promise (Edit).' 5.0 out of 5 stars Background music to a haunting dream, October 20, 2004
This review is from: The Piano (Audio CD)
The composer managed to write original music that sounds as if if could have been written in the mid-19th century by an gifted, highly original, yet still Scottish woman, and make it sound contemporary at the same time. I don't know how he pulled it off. It worked wonderfully with the film and conveyed a sense of passion, fun, tragedy, and romance. Do yourself a favor and see the video or listen to this.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not the Original 1993 Soundtrack, July 20, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Piano (MP3 Download)
I was deeply disappointed with this version of the soundtrack. I have the original soundtrack on tape, but I wanted to put it on my ipod so I bought this digital CD. I have to give it a sharp boo. Many of the songs are played completely different. However, the worst thing in my opinion is that the songs on this CD do not have nearly as much dimension and emotion as the original CD. I would say buy the original from someone and load it to your MP3 player manually. Note: if you are looking for something more conventional the newer version might be for you. If you want the music that you listened to over 15 years ago you will probably be disappointed with the new version.

I think there are very few film scores that make a lot of sense without the movie. This music is beautiful and timeless whether you have seen the movie or not. But you should see the movie!
