Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
The excellent young Polish pianist and prize-winner Hubert Rutkowski scores a hit with this unusually interesting program of piano works by four of Chopin's pupils: Karol Mikuli (1819-1897), Thomas Dyke Ackland Tellefsen (1823-1874), the short-lived, extremely talented Carl Filtsch (1830-1845), and Adolph Gutmann (1819--1882), to whom Chopin dedicated his third Scherzo in C-sharp minor.

There are polonaises, mazurkas, impromptus, one each nocturne, barcarolle, bolero, and valse and other pieces highly reminiscent of Chopin, some startlingly so. Mr. Rutkowski's playing is committed and expert, beautifully recorded last year in Poland. One of the best such collections I know. He has a separate CD of music by Chopin's close friend, agent, and copyist Julian Fontana, who emigrated to the U.S. and died there.

I was reminded of the imaginary unpublished Chopin works described by James Hilton in "Lost Horizon", played to his hero Hugh Conway by another of Chopin's pupils, an ancient Frenchman in the lamasery of Shangri-La (also imaginary, unfortunately).

What a surprise. The (massive) Chopin bibliography gives the impression that Chopin's students were short on talent (oh well, Carl Filtsch is always mentioned as a genius). Take a look, too, at the Naxos CD featuring chamber music by Chopin's students, beautifully played by Proniewicz (violin) and Jakobidze-Gitman (piano).
