Past masters of popular keyboard music, November 6, 2011
This review is from: Piano Music Classics 1 (Audio CD)
On PIANO MUSIC CLASSICS Volume 1, instead of opting for the stereo remake from 1965, the folks at MCA Special Products wisely chose to include the original Roger Williams 8/55 mono recording of "Autumn Leaves." This historic track is the only piano record to hit #1 on BILLBOARD. It remains the best-selling piano recording of all time. His version of "Born Free" also broke into the Top Ten in 1966. This song includes a central background male chorus.
Liberace's "Greensleeves" and "Love is a Many Splendored Thing" are also original '50s mono sides. The balance of the set is stereo.
Ferrante & Teicher's slow-paced "Over the Rainbow" is the most unusual arrangement. It opens with a standard piano at extreme left sound stage, a heavily reverbed harpsichord at center and a harpsichord without echo at far right. This orchestration changes midway through to include keyed chimes (left) and a piano that sounds like it came from a Wild West saloon (center). An ominously spacious single note per bar counterpoint (right) highlights the coda.
