Editorial Reviews

The first French prototypes of pedal pianos date from 1789, when Pontécoulant made a piano with a two-octave pedal board, followed (among others) by Erard in 1848. Sebastien Erard built the piano used for this recording, the No. 47588, in 1873. The amazing instrument had been put at the disposal of illustrious composers like Franck, Fauré, Ravel, and Milhaud.

1. A collection of works by Alkan, Dubois, Franck, Liszt, and Schumann

Format: Audio CD
Compositions for the Pedal Piano reflect the Romantic piano tradition. The French tended to really enjoy its possibilities as well as Robert Schumann. Highest awards go to French pianist, Jean Dube, in presenting a unique recital on 19th century compositions. The instrument selected for this recital is an 1873 French Erard with two octaves in the pedal. The program: Studien fur den Pedal-flugel, Op. 56 - i. Nicht zu schnell; ii. Mit innigem Ausdruck; iii. Andantino; iv. Inneg; v. Nicht zu schnell; vi. Adagio - (Robert Schumann -1810-1856); Toccata in G major - (Theodore Dubois - 1837-1924); Piere, Op. 65, no. 5 in F major, (Charles-Valentin Alkan - 1813-1888); Prelude, Fugue et Variation, Op. 18 - (Casar Franck - 1822-1890); Fantasie et Fugue "Ad nos" - ( Franz LIszt - 1811-1886). The sound is very good and the overall performances are excellent reflecting taste, sensitivity to the musical line and phrase, and a virtuoso's approach to certain compositions. The playing never allows the virtuosity to dominate the flavor of the compositions. Technique is never the end all and be all here.
The Schumann works are usually associated with the King of Instruments-The Pipe Organ. It is refreshing to hear them on the instrument which Schumann had intended to reflect his ideas and concepts. Likewise, the concert chestnut by Dubois has always been performed on the organ. The Franck and Liszt are available elsewhere for piano solo or organ solo (Franck) and the Liszt is available as an organ solo and piano four-hands. There is also a brilliant arrangement by Busoni of the Liszt for solo piano.
The program notes are excellent and available in several languages. The color photos add to the presentation. This cd is highly recommended for any musician, pianist, organist, or music lover who appreciates the Romantic age of the piano.
