Pure joy for the ear., January 2, 2007
This review is from: Piano Solos, Vol. 1 (Audio CD)
Larry Eanet's "Jump" is indeed a leap into the feel, the rhythm and the mood of Gershwin, Jerome Kern, Duke Ellington and Cole Porter. His phrasing and intensity shine throughout the journey of 14 lovingly rendered piano solos. The 1973 Steinway Grand on which this 1997 recording was made must have taken a deep breath of satisfaction after giving itself over to this celebration of swing and standard ballads. This album is a must for jazz listeners who want an excellent recording of the 30's and 40's coming to life one jewel at a time. My favorite recording of the year.
Larry Eanet can also be found playing live in the Washington, DC area, I am happy to report. The album "Jump" is a fine approximation of this excellent jazz interpreter's live performance but more amenable to playing over and over in the living room with a glass of wine to relive the greats of jazz piano. Just wonderful!
