Biography

Perhaps more of an advocate for contemporary music than any other major pianist essentially rooted in traditional repertory, Maurizio Pollini was born in Milan, Italy. He learned quickly and was given piano lessons from Carlo Lonati from an early age, making his public debut at the age of nine. Enrolling in the Milan Conservatory, he studied with Carlo Vidusso. In 1957 he performed a recital ... Read more in Amazon's Maurizio Pollini Store

5.0 out of 5 stars Previously released March 8, 2005
Format:Audio CD
Pollini is always great, but take note that three of the four sonatas (all except the Waldstein) are from previously released CDs on DG. If you already have these in your collection, the only thing new you'll be getting is the 1997 recording of the Op 53.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great CD January 19, 2005
Format:Audio CD
Every one of sonatas on this CD is great, especially his 97's live recording of "Waldstein" which is phenomenal - fast, fury and yet extremly articulate and controlled, and is unsurpassed by any recordings of it I have ever heard. I bought this one after somehow disappointed with Brendel's Tempest recording and thought Pollini might make it up for me. Indeed, Pollini's playing showed his passion, technique precision and control without over exagerated phrases or accents (which Brendel unfortunately has sometimes). Absolutely superb playing and a great CD!

Recorded at various moments in the impressive career of Maurizio Pollini (more precisely, around his age of 50), these Beethoven sonatas stand as a superb memento in what can be called the mature artistry of this world renowned Italian pianist. We have here all that has compounded for decades his fame as an unmatched keyboard virtuoso: dazzling technique, intense emotional involvement (far from that "clinical approach" - an epithet so often attached to Pollini's style), robust sense of structure (as always in his case, refined up to the minute detail), unimpeachable articulation, romantic fervour (his insightful nervousness), speed and exactitude in virtuosity passages (last movement of the "Tempest" sonata) and a lyrical inward mood (first movement of the celebrated "Moonlight" sonata). Regarding the "Tempest" sonata, I have unforgettable memories from Salzburg Festival - 2009, where Pollini performed it in the same stunning manner, getting simply mind-blowing effects. Each time I am listening to this recording I feel myself transported to that magic evening of august 2009, in Salzburg, where this sonata was paired in Pollini's recital by the fabulous "Appassionata". How otherworldly seem his steal fingers running upward and downward the keyboard! The last sonata on this CD - at the same time the latest recorded from a 1997 live performance - is another pinnacle of the keyboard literature: "Waldstein" sonata. Its inner tensions and large-scale proceedings seem perfectly suited for Pollini's authoritative approach.
High quality recording! Five stars!
