Editorial Reviews

Piano Sutras is a landmark release for Matthew Shipp whose accolades rank him as being universally acclaimed, the most brilliant pianists of his generation and one of the most original stylists in jazz history. This solo recording is both breathtakingly beautiful, deeply compansionate and intellectually upending. If you want to know where Jazz is in the present and where it will be in the future, all you have to do is listen to this release. A tour de force.

Matthew Shipp's forays into experimental jazz have proven to be some of the most approachable and oddly accessible of the many that populate the field these days. This solo outing is no exception. There's nothing "easy listening" about this...it's at turns jagged, murky (but never indecisive), bright, dark, and startling...but somehow it's all woven together in a way that feels very natural. This is one of my favorite Matthew Shipp albums, and that's saying a lot.

Matthew Shipp is a fine pianist. I loved his work in the Davis S. Ware quartet but it hasn’t been my good fortune to hear much of him so I looked forward to listening to this latest album on which he plays unaccompanied. Two of the pieces are by modern jazz classics –John Coltrane’s “Giant Steps” and Wayne Shorter’s “Nefertiti.” All the rest of the pieces are by Shipp. I wish I liked the album more but I don’t.

I suspect that’s my problem, not Shipp’s. Shipp is clearly an inventive composer who composes with an ear to the instrument on which he performs, a piano. Thus this music is percussive as well as tonal and Shipp takes advantage of its capacity to play tone clusters as well as single note lines. It’s probably my fault but of the first ten (out of thirteen) tunes, the only ones that stuck in my mind after they were done were “Giant Steps” and “Nefertiti,” neither composed by Shipp. But I loved the final three tunes, especially Shipp’s “Angelic Brain Cell.” Shipp’s earlier compositions seemed to be largely composed of deep block chords, dark rumblings from the lower ranges of the piano. They all seemed to blend together in my mind whereas “Cell” was complicated: lines ran across each other, almost in fugue.

I would recommend to anyone who considers buying this album that they take my comments for what they are: first impressions, and that’s all. I bought my first jazz recording sixty-four years ago and I listen to a range of jazz music from Armstrong, Bechet and Morton to Ornette Coleman and Cecil Taylor, Julius Hemphill and Ken Vandermark to John Zorn—I’m not a novice at jazz. But I found this album hard to assimilate and I don’t know if I want to spend more time on it.
