Mendelssohn's chamber music, esp. his piano trios, is grossly underrated. Schumann said that these works were "the model of our times", and I think he was right. Moreover, Mendelssohn's trios are IMHO among his most beautiful works and among the best examples of the genre, much preferable to Schubert's or Ravel's more celebrated trios. There aren't too many performances of these charming pieces in the catalogue, and among the 4-5 I've heard, these are the best. This is simple and eloquent playing that is altogether captivating, and the Barcelona Trio is pretty well recorded, too. In short, get this CD, I find it thoroughly delightful.

It is said that when Robert Schumann first heard Mendelssohn's piano he was amazed at the music and also felt despair, because he felt that it would be impossible for him to compose a trio of an equal standard. If you listen to this recording Schumann's view is clear. There is a cohesion between the players, a swing and thrust in the music and very beautiful phrasing which sometimes sounds playfull and sometimes gives the impression that the players are sweating on the edge of their seats. A lot of piano chamber music does have an easy middle class tea partyish sense about them. this does not.

I do not think that this recording can be surpassed.

Piano Trios Op 49 & 66 is a recording played by the Trio De Barcelona on this harmonia mundi s.a. recording from 1990. Jean Yves Bras has written the liner-notes which are very well written and quite informative as well. It was translated into English by J.O. Wootton. Recommended. 4/5.
