Review

"Pibbin the Small is the most delightful story about the reluctant adventures of a small tree frog--one filled to the brim with the sort of kindness found only in those who care deeply about others. I cannot imagine any child or adult not enjoying this book. Beautifully told with gorgeous illustrations, this would be an ideal addition to any child's library.

The author skilfully weaves the tale around the importance of friendship and throws in a pretty good plot to boot. We are taken straight into the story and soon introduced to Pibbin's colorful friends, all of which are well enough described for the reader to imagine them, and their boggy environment, even without the illustrations.

Pibbin displays tremendous courage in the face of danger and finds out he is a much braver frog than he thought, and all because his love for his friend was far greater than his fear of the unknown. A marvelous lesson in courage for children!"  ~ Amelia

"What a fun book to read! Beginning and reluctant readers will enjoy this book about a young tree frog and his adventures, trying to get help for his friend." ~Ruth

"This beginning adventure of Pibbin, a Pine Barrens tree frog, is written with plenty of action to satisfy any young reader . . . The engaging story, accurate details, and charming illustrations keep this book high on our family's reading list!"  ~bookbabe

"Your young reader will catch the busyness of the delightful creatures of friendship bog . .  . Join Pibbin's whole-hearted effort and rewarding adventure and feel what it's like to be a caring friend. . . I loved the illustrations!"  ~Lowly heart

From the Author

On a warm spring night in New Jersey, I listened to the Pine Barrens Treefrogs for the first time, and I will never forget their earnest songs: "Wonk-wonk-wonk!" A friend gave me one of those small green creatures to hold, but my delight was short-lived. I felt the frog's tiny feet scrabbling against my palm, I opened my fingers, and it was gone.

I asked myself, "Could anything so delicate also be brave? What adventures might he have?" The story of a little treefrog named Pibbin began to grow. He'd be small, but he would have a large heart of concern for his friends. As I thought further, I decided that Pibbin's adventures should be easy to read--for all children to enjoy--and I would gather them into a collection: Tales of Friendship Bog.

More About the Author

Gloria Repp grew up in the Hawaiian Islands and the Pacific Northwest; it was there she learned a love for wilderness that pervades her writing. She has taught creative writing, worked as an editor, and written books for children, teens, and adults. In addition to wilderness adventures, she enjoys flying in single-engine airplanes and has a particular fondness for owls and frogs.

Each family member has played a unique part in the writing of her books. Her eldest son teaches on the Big Island of Hawaii, and she has made trips with him to lava tubes and Mauna Kea's volcano; she values his insights on the natural sciences and on godly scholarship.

With her Seattle son, daughter-in-law, and grandson, she shares an interest in people and music and journeys of discovery, especially on the Olympic Peninsula. She relies on them for a reality check of plot problems.

Her daughter, who lives in Virginia, is a competent resource in matters of sewing, baking, and midwifery. The two cats who have chosen to grace her daughter's apartment have sufficient character to appear in stories from time to time and often take part in book discussions.

At home, her husband, a pilot and aircraft mechanic, provides valuable input for the aviation elements in her books, entry to the fascinating New Jersey Pine Barrens, and a strong, supporting shoulder. Although she likes traveling to research her novels, she thinks that the best part of every journey is coming home.

Pibbin the treefrog's adventures are exciting for a child as he travels through Bullfrog Bog to find Sweetberry leaves to help heal his hurt friend. The descriptions are picturesque and will capture a 4-7 years old's imagination. But they are realistic too giving an appropriate idea of boggs and the area. There is even a hint of mystery as everyone wondered who picked the large leaves Pibbin needs. The book is charming with a message--a friend will do whatever is necessary to help a friend in need. Pibbin was a true friend. The illustrations are beautiful and the color pictures a lesson in themselves. Excellent chidren's book.

I was given a copy of this book by the author in return for an honest review.

This is a fantastic book for children between the ages of 6 and up.

Pibbin is a small frog, who lives in the Friendship Bog, along with his friends. When his friend Sheera, a turtle, is hurt, Pibbin embarks on a dangerous adventure to help find Sweetberry leaves to heal her injuries.

This is a very charming tale for young children. It is a very well written story that is very exciting. I found Pibbin to be a very sweet character. He may be small, but he is very brave. All the other characters are also well written. The story flowed beautifully, and is engaging enough that children who have short attention spans will be enthralled!
Depending on the child's reading ability, I think this book could be read quite easily by them. There are some beautiful illustrations drawn by Tim Davis that compliment the story, and gives the child a visual representation of the characters in the story.
Gloria Repp is a wonderful author, who's imagination and story telling prowess has captured my attention. I am now looking forward to reading the next book in the Friendship Bog Series.
I recommend this book if you are looking for an adventure story that is exciting, but not too frightening, for your little ones.

As a teacher I recommend this story for all ages. A frog with mission to see how determined he was to help a friend in need. In spite of struggles and difficulties he continued to press on. He didn't let his emotions drag him down but wanted what was best for his friend. He was tough and respectful. He was cautious when necessary and kind where ever he went. The pictures were well drawn and the story was easy to follow. Good job!

Pibbin the Small by Gloria Repp

Recommendation: Highly Recommended

This first book in the The Friendship Bog Series offers a great family read. Pibbin is a tiny tree frog who lives with his many friends in Friendship Bog. One day, Sheera the box turtle gets hurt quite seriously and no one knows just what to do. Sheera tells Pibbin that he must go find some sweetberry leaves by the Silver Sea. It is a long trip and no one thinks Pibbin should go, except Gaffer. Gaffer is a wise old frog and he tells Pibbin to be courageous and find a traveling buddy. So, Pibbin and his friend Leeper set out on an adventure. There are many dangers out there, but they know they must return quickly with the sweetberry leaves to save their friend Sheera and they are willing to take the risk.

Postives: A fun and simple story that beautifully illustrates courage, friendship and humility. It is a great book to read as a family but also has short chapters and great illustrations that your blossoming reader will enjoy it as well. Friendship Bog is a real place and on her website, the author has beautiful pictures for you to enjoy. She also provides some pictures in the ebook version of the story along with a map of Friendship Bog.

Negatives: None

Talking Points: This book is full of Biblical topics to talk about with your kids, here are just a few ideas: Pibbin was such a selfless little frog. It didn't matter that he was small or that no one thought he should take the trip he was more concerned about Sheera than himself. Philp. 2:3 tells us to consider others as more important than ourselves. Pibbin certainly did this. Talk about ways you can prefer other people and show them you love Jesus (and them) more than yourself.

I started reading Pibbin the Small to my four-year old grandson over Thanksgiving break. We read the first three chapters in one sitting and he wanted to read more. He took the book home with him so his dad could finish reading it to him. When I asked him later if he finished it he told me how Pibbin was able to help his friend. He also said he and his dad were reading it again. A very good book to keep this active little boy's attention.

This was a great little book! I read it to my children (ranging in age from 11 down to 3) before bed. Almost every chapter ended in suspense and it kept them eager for the next night of reading. The book taught a good lesson in the value of and sacrifices in true friendship. It really made for a delightful family time before bed each night.

Gloria doesn't seem to miss anything on her romps in her real-life favorite bog or her imaginary one, and neither will you! Your young reader will catch the busyness of the delightful creatures of friendship bog, as well as the faithfulness of true friendship. An excellent example of well written literature for emulation--for all your budding authors. She sings out the rhythms of the WONKS, the Peeper frog's choruses,"Sea,Sea,Sea". She captures all the wonderful changes of little frog faces. You will grin, then droop, and sometimes have a question on your face too. Join Pibbin's whole-hearted effort and rewarding adventure and feel what it's like to be a caring friend,"He felt as warm as sunlight, too!" Oh, and a teacher will see all the side trips one can take to learn more about swamps, ponds, bogs....,and of course frogs! I loved the illustrations! Thank you Gloria and Tim! Remember, "No one is too small to be brave"-- for ones friends.
