a sweet SOUNDTRACK,
This review is from: Tenacious D The Pick of Destiny (Audio CD)
Man people are making way too big a deal about this cd not being long enough and a "disappointment." First off, most of the songs will grow more and more on you each time that you listen to them. I think with a few good listens you will begin singing along just as we all did with the first album. Secondly, the CD is a SOUNDTRACK and while you could consider it the D's second album, it's main purpose is still to be a soundtrack. That being said, while some of the songs might not be that good to some of us now, when they are being played in the movie up on the big screen with Jack and Kyle performing those actions in the lyrics of the songs, I would imagine the songs will be pretty awesome. D fans- Don't listen to all the negative nancys, this is a great buy especially now at $9.99.

When I put this album in my CD player after getting it, my first impression was that it wasn't as good as the first album. Three and a half days later, I can't stop listening to it! My girlfriend is sick of my singing.
Beelzeboss is the best track on the album by far, with Grohl's drumming and vocals as the devil, and the D absolutely rocking. The appearences of Meatloaf and Dio were definite plusses. It's awesome to hear History on this album. Hopefully my relationship can withstand this onslaught from the D.

Feels more like an extended soundtrack than an album,
By Tommy M. (Berkeley) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Tenacious D The Pick of Destiny (Audio CD)
It's an excellent opening track, just for hearing Dio alone, but then it's another dozen or so before we encounter something that's longer than three minutes long, and the average length is two minutes. While nothing overstays its welcome, and Black's voice is still great, and the guitar work still graceful... so many of these songs are over before they get a chance to begin.
There's a much wider variety of music on here, like they're spreading their wings, but when it gets brilliant it feels more accidental than inspired. I think "Master Exploder" is genius, but I enjoy it more for its artistic merits than because it rocks or is funny. I think the problem is that this album can't find a groove in between "rock n' roll with a sense of humor" and nearly Zappa-inspired antics. In the end, with its lack of cohesion, and the brevity of the album and most of the songs, I feel like I got a soundtrack with a couple bonus tracks.

For anyone who isn't previously versed in the D, this CD may be a little off-putting. Especially those who like the single Pick of Destiny that is all over MTV. But being a fan of the D for a long time, I rather enjoy this disc. My only problem with Tenacious D has been that they didn't have enough music on their first CD. This problem is solved on the soundtrack to their movie that opens next week. One thing I've always thought is that when they really want to be, Tenacious D are an excellent band. Kyle and Jack can harmonize easily and Jack is quite the frontman, who can also sing when he wants to. The lyrics are goofy and crass but it's the magic of the D. The musicianship of the band is excellent as I have said before, Kyle is a solid guitar player and their drummer is the multi-talented Dave Grohl (Nirvana, Foo Fighters). Certain songs I really enjoyed are "Kickapoo" which features both Meatloaf and Ronnie James Dio. Other good songs are History (which is from their TV show, which are included on the Tenacious D Masterworks, which I would also suggest for D fans), Master Exploder and Beezleboss, which is pretty metal, even for the D. So if you want to hear some good rock music with the appeal of Jack Black and stilly humor, join the ever growing fans of the D immediately!

Too short, too little new material.,

I've seen the defense that this "is a soundtrack" and isn't the official 2nd-album by The D. And while I can appreciate that line of thinking, the fact is that they've been in the spotlight for 9 years now (since being a Mr.Show bumper in '98), and in that time they've only managed to squeak-out their debut release and... this.
Less than 35-minutes of music, much of it feeling very filler-like, including two recycled tracks ('History' and a revamp of 'Classico'). A fan can't help but feel disappointed. At least the price (esp. here on Amazon) is right. It's priced just above an EP, and that's about how much new music you get. I do hope they buckle-down and get to writing a proper new album. Hearing the genuis that is 'Kickapoo' on this soundtrack just reminds us HOW AMAZING Tenacious D can be when they really put their minds to it.

It's just not Tenacious D quality,

Tenacious D's first album was a masterpiece. It was hilarious and the music was great. I think all of Jack Black's talent was sucked out of him in that horrible movie, School of Rock. He's simply not funny anymore. More than half of the songs on this album are just trash... Jack Black saying "bibbily-bee" 100 times is funny every once in a while... but it's half of this album. Cursing every other word isn't really my definition of funny either. Their first album had ridiculous over-the-top lyrics. They swore, but it it added to the goofiness... This album just sounds like they're swearing to swear. I'm not nine years old. The only really good songs are History (which is older than their first album) and the POD (which has to be radio friendly). The Gov't Totally Sucks is almost a good song as well, but it falls short.
Without going into it very much... The music isn't very good on this album either. Any song from their first album can show up when I hit random and fits well into my normal rock catalog, but I imagine I'd skip half of these songs if they show up because they're mostly boring. They're not bad by any means, but just not very interesting. Let's not forget Kyle... He's hardly on this album. I don't know if making this album as a soundtrack limited them in what they could do... I hope so. Otherwise, they've just lost whatever they had.

The D pumped this album full of Rocket Sauce,

All the complaints I see have to do with the album being too short. Like others have said: this is a soundtrack- not a full album. I was able to go to a sneak preview of this movie (which "Rocks Your F'n Socks Off!!!!!) and you can see the relevance. Taken in context with the movie, this album fully deserves 5 stars.

I've always been a fan of Jack Black. I like how he takes the music so seriously, yet has a lot of fun with the lyrics and creation of the songs.
The movie Pick of Destiny was pretty good, although ended without ending. If you are a fan of tenacious D, you will like this soundtrack. Its got fun songs, awesome melodies, and memorable lyrics that will crack you up. If you take life too seriously, you won't get jack black and you won't enjoy it either. There are a million bands that make serious songs about serious topics, i'm glad that i can put Tenacious D on to make me laugh, or at least crack a smile. I recommend this to anyone that just likes all different kinds of music. I do have to say in regard to overall tenacious d, that if you dont have thier debut album, get that one first, its much better in my opinion, but this album is a good supplement to it. All in all, it is worth a listen.

I am down with the D,
By The Jerk (USA) - See all my reviews

First, see the movie, or you will be lost. Very good soundtrack. This
has the best D songs yet. The little acoustic songs, " baby," (one of my favorites) "Dude"( untill the end) and yeah yeah yeah, " history." Plus some heavy jams," Master exploder." More up-tempo, " break in-city, car chase city." Those two are simply o.k. Then, the un-believably catchy, " the government totally sucks," and the two part, "Papagenu." Yes most of the songs are very short. So what?? I agree There are a few songs which could have been a little longer, but most of the songs fit as short. The cd's only 33 minutes. The two longest songs, " Kickapoo." 4 minutes. And the 6 minute battle between the D and the devil,(Dave Grohl)" Beelzeboss." Like the 1st album there's a lot of f-words. Except this time I would guess almost double. For a 2nd album that's 20+ minutes shorter than the 1st album, that's a freaking lot. Enjoyable.

Where's the Sketch Comedy?,
By DRiley (United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Tenacious D The Pick of Destiny (Audio CD)
Tenacious D's first album was peppered with sketch comedy routines, but in "The Pick of Destiny" Tenacious D eschews their signature sketch comedy in favor of a completely music-driven comedy album. For some, this is a welcome change, but I thought that the non-musical "Inward Singing" and "Karate Schnitzel" were some of the best parts of their original album. I understand that this is a soundtrack, but maybe they could have included more scenes from the movie to make up for the missing sketches.
What sets Tenacious D apart from other bands in the joke-rock genre is that, stylistically speaking, "The D" is actually a really good band. Their musical style runs the gamut from classic 70's rock, to the arena rock of the 80's, to modern metal. |
