One of the best albums of the Seventies, its smooth and soul,
By JEFF PHILLIPS (Chicago, IL) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Pick of the Litter (Audio CD)
This album contains a great collection of songs, all of which are smooth renditions of a soulful group. The Games People Play is a song that you can hear over and over and enjoy singing along with. The same can be said for Honest I Do. The vocals offer a combination of soul and rhythm that is at the very top of the music world. The mix of songs seems to fit together so well that to buy a best collection ruins the chemistry that this album exudes.

This group just doesn't put out bad albums, and "Pick of the Litter" is another in the long line of excellent productions. The Spinners were at their zenith in the early and mid-70's and this shows why. From their Atlantic debut album "Spinners" (best album of all time in my opinion) to "Mighty Love", "New and Improved", and "Pick of the Litter", they have a string of four albums hardly matched by any soul group ever."Pick" is a little slower with more ballads than the others, though the mega-hit "They Just Can't Stop It (Games People Play)" and "All That Glitters", "Love or Leave", are real toe-tapping grooves. The Spinners really show their vocal talents on this album. That's Bobbie Smith on "You Made a Promise to Me" really hitting those notes. I've always liked "I Don't Want to Lose You" and Henry Fambrough is sensational on the last cut, "Just as Long as We Have Love". An interesting note on that tune, Dionne Warwick teams up with Henry on a great tune, which should've been a hit, just like her previous duet with the Spinners on "Then Came You" from the "New and Improved" album. This is a real classic and any fan of soul music should own it.
