This is a really nice choice for any young dog lover, especially one who is thinking about getting a dog for the first time. It tells the story of Sam, a young boy who is going to the shelter to pick out a dog. He's worrying about what kind to get, one like David's, or Auntie Ruth's or maybe Kate's dog who likes to do the hokey pokey and give lot's of kisses. How is he to know which kind? The ending is great when a full two page illustration shows Sam with a puppy bounding out of the group to jump in his arms. Sam learns what a lot of us dog lover's already know - sometimes, dogs pick their owners, not the other way around!
The rhyming flows well and the illustrations are vibrant and do a great job of portraying each dog and their differences. This is a book with a great message reinforcing the love between dogs and their kids and the importance of adopting shelter dogs. A good pick for preschool story time or any child's personal collection. Recommended.
