Gotta Get this ...,
By
This review is from: Pick-up Lines (Paperback)
Leron King never imagined that as innocent as a one night stand could possibly be, this one experience would turn into a nightmare and form the basis of the entire story. Unfortunately this is exactly what happens and it is what keeps the reader glued to the edge of their seat to see just what exactly will happen next. Michael T. Owens has told a story that has captured the attention of the reader and keeps that reader firmly in his grasp until the end. A story with an unusual twist, Pick-Up Lines had me enthralled. Leron goes to the club with the boys and they engage in a friendly competition to see who can attain the most phone numbers of the fine women. Leron engages in a few too many drinks while mingling with the ladies. He attains phone numbers and in the process gives his number to a special honey or two. Naturally the next day when his phone ring, he assumes that because she has his number and although he can't place her face she has to be decent. He rolls up to her Buckhead condo, (she lives well) still thinking its all to the good. Upon the answer of her door, he knew he was in trouble. Trying not to waste the evening and not wanting to ruin the streak of his lucky drawers, he partakes. The next day, after waking up in his own apartment the nightmare truly begins. Meanwhile, the female perspective of the story has problems as well. Michelle is engaged to be married and doesn't feel that her fiancé' is truly ready for what she needs. She's in search of her own, a promotion on her job, and a sense of belonging. She meets with Leron and collisions happen- both good and bad. An expose' in relationships, Pick-up Lines truly delivers.

Thin Line Between Love and Hate,

This review is from: Pick-up Lines (Paperback)
Michael T. Owens gives us a good, clean, easy read! You are introduced to a one Leron King and his crew of boys who look forward to hitting the steamy nightlife of Hotlanta and getting the honies with those crazy pick up lines. The night life no longer seems to hold its lustre and after Leron wakes up one morning with a woman who makes him seriously consider joining AAA and taking up a life of celibacy the story begins to weave the tale of a twisted sistah who has been jilted one time too many. Sistah with the missing screws becomes affixed with making Leron's life a living hell. Even Freddy Krueger could not have given him a worst nightmare as Leron becomes the target of pyschos unimaginable plot for revenge.Leron thinks he has given this one the shake. While getting over the whole sickening episode that leaves this one playa feeling violated and betrayed by the liquor that starts making anything after the 5th round look like Halle Berry, he runs in to the beautiful Michelle Barkley. Michelle is a sister who appears to have it all together, yet her fiance refuses to commit to her in every way. His job always seems to come first and he fondles the keys of his computer more than he does Michelle. Frustrated, Michelle is tired of playing second fiddle and when Leron appears and is able to slowly penetrate those walls, she lowers her resistance and entertains the idea of someone else that is willing to give her what her man isn't at home. Leron and Michelle hook up, and it looks like they both might have a chance at something lasting, but the past has a funny way of catching up with you and always at the wrong time: uninvited and unannounced! This story reels a cast of true characters that we either can relate to or we know someone like that in our circle of friends. It is a story about growing up, weighing the consequences of our choices and reminds us that most of the time everything that we are looking for can be staring us right in the face! This high-paced drama takes some unpredicatable turns you never see coming. This is Fatal Attraction meets Thin Line Between Love and Hate! I enjoyed it tremendously and look forward to seeing this comedic romance thiller appearing on big screens soon. Michael has made his presence known... watch out literary world! Michael T. Owens is in the house! What will he think of next?!

I am in a selfish state of mind...,

is how character Michelle Barkley put it as she rehearsed what to tell her fiancé Greg Colbert instead of coming clean regarding her involvement with main character Leron King. This story is all about the consequences that may follow when one comes from a selfish place. Following Leron's reckless one night stand it doesn't take long for life to fall apart for Leron and Michelle, whom both suffer the wrath of the 'woman scorn.'Michelle goes running to her best friend, Tonya, with her troubles which could turn out to be the worst thing she's ever done, while Leron's ego won't allow him to tell a soul, not even his long time friend Femia whom had been his shoulder since childhood. He even goes home to New Hampshire to attend Femia's graduation and seeing her face to face he still doesn't fess up, but does take notice of how she has filled out! Tisk, tisk, is there now love in the air for Leron and Femia, maybe we will find out in Mr. Owens' next novel. Michael has taken a lighthearted approach, where his sense of humor peeks through as he spins this fast paced tale of very real disadvantages of being a player. Written in first person and told from the perspectives of Leron and Michelle, the story unfolds in Atlanta Georgia, but could just as well be anyplace, USA. Michael's style alone is enough to keep you turning pages, but there is also an element of suspense, which I like that also kept me wondering about the characters. There are some areas that I felt could have been covered in depth for greater insight, but nevertheless, it is a well structured, light, and entertaining read filled with an assortment of colorful characters that you'll find yourself rooting for. It's like a romance novel from a male's prospective and I recommend that you read Pick Up Lines for yourselves.

A one-night stand should be more than a notion!,

This review is from: Pick-up Lines (Paperback)
Leron is an aspiring author who pays the bills by installing security systems. Michelle is a career minded woman in advertising with a fiancé that she is unsure of. After literally bumping into each other, they would have never known that their lives would somehow be destined to intertwine in Michael T. Owens', Pick Up Lines.Like any other weekend, Leron goes to the club to pick up women. After a few drinks he gives his number to a young woman named Anesia. The following weekend his boys stand him up but Anesia calls and Leron makes the split second decision to spend some time. He realizes he must have drunk more than he thought because she is nothing that he remembers. Despite not really being attracted to her, he sleeps with her anyway. Michelle gets ready for a night out with her fiancé only to find out that he plans to work all night. Frustrated with his neglect of her and her feelings she kicks him out and questions whether marrying him would be the right thing to do. Eventually Leron and Michelle hook up and we experience more twists and turns than a boardwalk pretzel. Mr. Owens has a definite flair for the dramatic. Six degrees (or less) of separation is not wasted in this tale of typical twenty-something drama, where nothing is off limits. This book is full of witty dialogue and conversation that will have book clubs talking way into the night. However, for this reader these characters become instantly predictable and then take a sharp turn into people we don't recognize making the resolution of the storylines unbelievable. If you want a quick, drama filled read, pick up Pick Up Lines. Kotanya

OFF THE HOOK!,

OFF THE HOOK!Its been a long time since a book made me laugh SO much! Michael T. Owens is an excellent writer!! He put a new spin on dating. From the first sentence in the book I was completely hooked! I read it in 2 days, and would certainly read it again! This book is a definite MUST read! Michael T. Owens captured both the female and male side of the story, and it flowed perfectly! He created characters that you could care about. I could feel the pain of both Leron and Michelle as the story unfolded. The book had supense, humor, and a whole lot of drama! It made you laugh, and yet there was a hidden lesson for us all to learn..Sometimes it is hard to find a book that holds your attention from cover to cover, but Pick-Up Lines accomplished all that and more. I enjoyed this book VERY much and look forward to reading more of his work.

The title is somewhat deceiving. The title and the book cover led me to believe it was just a book of lines guys use to pick up girls. I'm glad I read the book and did not judge by it's title. It's actually a good book. Since I consider Atlanta my second home (I visit the city often, and would to relocate there), I liked the fact the characters were from Atlanta. I could relate to the characters better because of that. It's a boy meets girl story with a dramatic, humorous, hip hop twist to it. Michael T. Owens is a great new author. I look forward to reading other books by Michael.

From the perspectives of Leron and Michelle, Michael T. Owens brings forth a charismatic tale that will entice, charm, and seduce your imagination. I laughed, awed, and gasped with every turn of the page. I enjoyed it so much that I read the book twice! Owens is truely talented and I anticipate future novels of the same calibre.

Leron King can't believe all that is happening to him - all because of a date gone badly. Leron, Ra'ed, Xavier, Spurt, and Dave have always had a smooth line for the ladies. Leron says one line too many when he meets Anesia. Anesia is not what you call cute or pretty, but to an intoxicated Michelle Barkley, an Account Executive thinks she has Mr. Right but Author Michael T. Owens writes a comical tale of what could happen Tracey

Pick-Up,

This review is from: Pick-up Lines (Paperback)
Leron King never imagined that a meaningless one night stand would transform itself into his own personal Hell. However, the woman with whom he had the escapade didn't consider it such a meaningless event. In the midst of finding a woman who he genuinely cares about, Leron's past comes to haunt him in the form of a would-be stalker who is out for revenge.Michelle didn't consider herself a needy person, but her fiancée Greg crossed the line when his work consumed him and left no time for him to spend with her. She must come to a decision of whether or not she wants to be in a relationship with an absentee boyfriend. Leron and Michelle met by happenstance; it was a déjà vu type of meeting that makes one ponder the concept of destiny. Having run into each other twice, in the lobby of Michelle's office building and on one of Leron's client visits, they took their chance meetings a step further and built a foundation of friendship, and, later, romance. The story is told from the perspectives of both Leron and Michelle, allowing the reader to form a more personal relationship with both protagonists. Nevertheless, I still didn't feel like either character had a strong voice and it sometimes took a few paragraphs at the beginning of each chapter before I was sure of who was narrating. The book built up to a strong climax, but I closed it feeling a bit disappointed that it had ended. I wanted to know more about what took place after the plot had thickened, but felt as if I were left hanging. Owens has a strong storyline, but it could be enhanced by his expounding on the events at the end of the book. Reviewed by CandaceK |
