I bought this book because I needed to replace the ball joints on my 2001 F250. The section that covers this repair tells you to take it to "an automotive machine shop or other qualified facility". I found free detailed instructions with pictures on the internet and did the job in my garage with no problems whatsoever. If Chilton is going to call this a repair manual, they should actually cover common repairs and let the consumer decide if they are competent enough to perform them. I will never again waste my money on another Chilton manual.

This manual is the first resource I go to everytime I need to work on my truck. The information it provides is informative and very helpful. It does NOT give incedibly detailed information about many things but provides the right information to get you started in the right direction. With the slight variances manufacturers make from year to year. (i.e. wiring diagrams, fuse locations, etc.) it would be almost impossible to cover every detail. With this manual, some background knowledge, and some additional resources, you should be able to do any task you have the motivation, and tools, to undertake.

Chilton Guides are must-haves for the non-pro who likes to do some of his own work. The guide provides step-by-step instructions for many tasks, from the mundane to the challenging. I used a Chilton to replace the clutch on my Ford F150 with some friends in high school, and the guide deserves most of the credit.

The pictures are black and white but are clear enough to see what is being described. My only real complaint is that some of the steps gloss over details which can lead to a good bit of head scratching and wasted time. The guide isn't exhaustive, so you may not be able to do everything yourself, as others have noted. Overall, a solid 4 out of 5.

It's not a manufacturer's shop manual, which would be much larger and in multiple volumes. But it does cover the essentials. It did a good job expaining how to change out my truck's hydraulic clutch system. The B&W pictures are sometimes not as detailed as I might like, but you get what you pay for. This particular purchase was a great deal--brand new for less than half price.
